Flood alert as heavy rains continue in Zimbabwe (AP)

HARARE, Zimbabwe ? Zimbabwe's weather department is issuing a flood alert and says heavy rains are expected to continue.

The Meteorological Service says downpours of more than 3 inches (nearly 8 centimeters) are forecast in northern and eastern regions through Jan. 2, accompanied by gusty winds.

In a statement Friday, the government's civil protection agency also advised affected communities to find shelter on higher ground.

It warned that roofs could be blown off and low-cost and mud-built houses risk collapse from water saturation.

In years of economic decline, broken drainage and sewers have led to outbreaks of waterborne diseases worsened by rain. More than 4,000 people died from the waterborne illness cholera in 2008.

Bella Italia (Covent Garden, West End, London, by massageblast)

It?s hard to believe that in a vibrant city like London and in a great location like Covent garden, this chain of restaurants manage to still make it despite of the horrendous food and extremely poor service. I would advice anyone to avoid it, there are plenty of better budget restaurants in London town, strada would be an option or even pizza express.

Alberto Del Rio vowed to be more ruthless
For once, The Mexican Aristocrat looked humbled. Rolled out in a wheelchair by Ricardo Rodriguez, Alberto Del Rio revealed that he suffered a torn groin in the previous Monday?s main event, which will cause him to miss some ring time. (FULL STORY) When WWE fans cheered his misfortune, Nikki and Brie Bella came to their crush?s defense, but only ended up bickering between themselves. Irritated, Del Rio sent the twins away and vowed to return more vicious than ever in 2012.

Big Show def. David Otunga by Disqualification
With one arm tied behind his back, Big Show squared off with the litigious David Otunga, but quickly learned he?d been set up. Sabotaged by the vicious Mark Henry, the giant was nearly brutalized until World Heavyweight Champion Daniel Bryan hit the ring and distracted The World?s Strongest Man. Henry managed to escape before Show could destroy him, but Otunga wasn?t so lucky. The World?s Largest Athlete hit him with a chokeslam so huge, the lawyer may have forgotten where he went to college.

John Cena def. The Miz by Count-out; R-Truth returned
Outraged over Kane?s recent attacks, John Cena demanded The Big Red Monster face him in the ring live in Chicago. Instead, he got The Awesome One. Looking to end 2011 on a high note, The Miz challenged the man he beat at WrestleMania XXVII and ended up getting tossed around by a very focused Cena.

Frustrated, Miz rolled out of the squared circle and talked trash until he got counted out. But before he could escape without any more damage, he was stopped by R-Truth. Returning after being put in the hospital by The Awesome One, Truth recklessly battered his former friend around the ringside area and then warned, ?This New Year?s, acquaintances be forgot? No! They?re going to get got!?

U.S. Champion Zack Ryder & Eve def. Tyson Kidd & Natalya
Now that Zack Ryder has the United States Championship, he?s set his sunglasses on a greater prize ? Eve. Teaming with the gorgeous Diva after spoiling her with Broski merchandise for Christmas, Long Island Iced-Z proved that he can work very well with the former Divas Champion. Eve definitely enjoyed their success over Tyson Kidd & Natalya, but she doesn?t seem ready to accept Ryder?s offer for a date.

Booker T def. Intercontinental Champion Cody Rhodes in a Title-Free Match (PHOTOS | WATCH)
Aw, shucky ducky. Three days after his distraction caused Cody Rhodes to fall to Zack Ryder on SmackDown, Booker T beat his vicious rival in the ring with the scissors kick. The six-time World Champion proved that not only does he have Cody?s number, but he?s still got it in the ring.

Interim Raw General Manager John Laurinaitis set a Gauntlet Match for WWE Champion CM Punk (PHOTOS)
The Chicago crowd hoping to give their hometown hero a rousing ovation was disappointed when Raw kicked off with Interim General Manager John Laurinaitis mocking CM Punk's signature entrance. With the WWE Champion's T-shirt pulled over his suit jacket, the executive proceeded to give himself credit for the exciting changes in sports-entertainment.

That was all it took to bring out a livid Second City Savior. Explaining that Raw?s revolution is due to Punk being ?the best wrestler in the world,? the WWE Champion looked ready to hit the EVP with a GTS. That?s when Laurinaitis announced his idea for the evening ? Punk will face three opponents in a Gauntlet Match and if any of those competitors beat the champion, they will receive a WWE Title Match next week on the first Raw of the New Year!?

The Straight Edge Superstar was game, but he wanted to up the ante. If the tattooed Superstar beat all three Superstars, he proposed that he get a fourth match with none other than John Laurinaitis himself.

  • Booker T def. Intercontinental Champion Cody Rhodes in a Title-Free Match
  • U.S. Champion Zack Ryder & Eve def. Tyson Kidd & Natalya

President Obama to provide federal funding for Alzheimer's programs

As the world's leading voluntary health organization advocating for Alzheimer's care, support and research, the Alzheimer's Association is pleased that Congress and President Obama have responded to calls by the Alzheimer's Association on behalf of people with Alzheimer's disease, caregivers, health professionals and researchers, to provide federal funding for several programs critical to the Alzheimer's community.

The Fiscal Year 2012 Omnibus Appropriations bill, that was passed last week and signed by President Obama today, includes funding for the National Alzheimer's Project Act (NAPA) Advisory Council on Alzheimer's Research, Care, and Services.? NAPA mandates the development of the first-ever national plan to address the rapidly escalating Alzheimer's crisis and coordination of Alzheimer's disease efforts across the federal government. One year after enactment of NAPA, the Association is delighted that Congressional Appropriators supported the intent of Congress for robust implementation of the statute by providing $250,000 in funding for the Advisory Council. Leadership and foresight by Senate Labor, Health and Human Services, and Education Appropriations Subcommittee Chairman Tom Harkin (D-IA), Ranking Member Richard Shelby (R-AL), House Labor, Health and Human Services, and Education Appropriations Subcommittee Chairman Rep. Denny Rehberg (R-MT) and Ranking Member Rosa DeLauro (D-CT) is appreciated by the Alzheimer's Association and the millions impacted by this fatal disease.

"It is clear that the Alzheimer's Association's efforts on behalf of people living with Alzheimer's disease, families and health professionals, are being heard. We urgently need funding that will provide us with a greater understanding of Alzheimer's as well as provide care and support to those currently impacted," said Robert Egge, Vice President of Public Policy for the Alzheimer's Association. "Our hope is that the priority placed on Alzheimer's disease by the federal government will continue to increase to a level that is proportionate to the human and financial toll of this disease."

Continuing to set an example for successful programs, Congress intends to fund the National Alzheimer's Call Center, which is a helpline run by the Alzheimer's Association that is available 24-hours a day, 7 days a week to provide crisis counseling, care consultation, and information and referral services in 140 different languages for people with the disease, caregivers, families and professionals and all those impacted. Historically, federal funding for the National Alzheimer's Call Center has been included in the annual appropriations bill at $1 million.? This productive private-public partnership has included a matching investment by the Alzheimer's Association to ensure effective support for people impacted by Alzheimer's disease.? The Association is pleased that the program was included in the Administration on Aging (AoA) Aging Network Support Activities program for Fiscal Year 2012. While the specific funding level was not enumerated in the Omnibus bill, the intent of Congress is to continue this successful program.

"SNL" writer Joe Bodolai dead of apparent suicide (Reuters)

LOS ANGELES (TheWrap.com) ? Joe Bodolai -- who wrote for "Saturday Night Live" for the 1981-1982 season and co-wrote the first draft of the "Wayne's World" movie with Mike Myers -- has died in an apparent suicide, according to various reports. He was 63.

The body of Bodolai was found Monday in a hotel room in Hollywood. Near his corpse was a mixture of anti-freeze and Gatorade that he is believed to have consumed.

While a suicide note was not found near his body, an apparent suicide note was published Friday on Bodolai's blog, "Say It Ain't So, Joe."

The extensive post, titled "If This Were Your Last Day Alive What Would You Do?," details what Bodolai hoped to have seen in his life, his predictions for 2012, what he was proud of and what he regretted.

Under "Things I Regret," Bodolai listed "my inability to conquer my alcoholism the things I did because of it," and "That I am no longer able to withstand any more of life's pain."

Under a photograph of Robert F. Kennedy, Bodolai wrote: "When I was Young. When I had Hope."

The end of the post reads: "I don't need replies or comments or anything. I need to feel the good that I did and whatever good I have ever done for you is enough for me. May you all have the happy lives you deserve. Thank you all for being in my life. Love, Joe."

The day before the post was published on his blog, Bodolai wrote on Facebook that he was "alone this year." He said he intended to volunteer on Christmas Day by serving dinner to the homeless.

Following news of Bodolai's death, his friends and admirers shared their thoughts on Twitter. "He was a lovely man," wrote comedian Dave S. Foley, one of the cast members of "The Kids in the Hall," which was produced by Bodolai.

Bodolai is survived by two sons.

TMZ first reported on the death of Bodolai.

Keith Ferrazzi: Serve and Grow... Together This Holiday

A number of holiday seasons ago we were sitting at a fancy resort attending a well-known holiday weekend event that I had proudly accepted an invitation to along with almost a thousand other individuals and their families. We were talking about the state of our world when my guest leaned over and asked: "Do you think next year we might actually go do something instead of just talking about it?"

The comment launched our annual tradition of traveling to a third world country to serve in orphanages for the holidays. We wanted to "do something good" and the choice has ended up being one of the most unexpected and powerful gifts we have given ourselves.

This year, a number of friends and their families are joining us to serve others, rejuvenate themselves, explore a new region of the world, and to connect much more deeply as a family through our service to and engagement with orphans living just outside of Antigua, Guatemala.

I did this particular trip a few years ago and was struck by the amazing beauty of it all. It was a spiritually grounding experience and an empowering way to start the New Year. I can't wait to see the experience through the eyes of our friends' children. The experience is transformative to anyone who has not experienced real poverty, but then also to witness such deep joy among those with nothing. Each year we grow more connected as a family and a couple.

These experiences prove to be transformational, a reflective and stark reminder of what's important. Our hope is that we all come back more grounded, more empathetic, authentic and generous, and that it stays with us. Being able to help others in such a real way has even accelerated my own leadership when I get back home. I know my team relationships have become more understanding and our collaborative success has grown.

We also welcome and include our friends and their families who do not go with us. In supporting last year's trip, which was to Cambodia, our friend Arianna donated 20 chickens to the kids we met during one of our days at an orphanage. Oh, and also a big pot of milk and cookies, which I suspect the kids may have appreciated more than the chickens.

If you care to join Arianna and others in supporting these kids this holiday season, I might suggest going to www.keithferrazzi.com/about/charity to read past blogs, maybe looking at additional pictures of various trips on Facebook, and talking with your own families about how you all might serve and grow together. What could be more in the spirit of the holidays than making a difference together?

Biggest Windows 8 news for week ending Dec. 23

The big news this week regarding Microsoft's upcoming Windows 8 software was that it features picture passwords, something that drew widespread attention but also some skepticism. Otherwise it was a week of rumors about what other features Microsoft's next big software release might contain and devices that might be coming out specifically to support it.

Picture Password

Microsoft has revealed a number of details on the Building Windows 8 blog regarding a new feature coming to Windows 8 dubbed "Picture Password". Upon hearing the name of the feature, you may assume (incorrectly) that it's some sort of integrated face recognition technique, but that couldn't be further from the truth. In fact, the contents of the picture used for the login password are somewhat irrelevant. It's actually touch gestures overlayed over the photo that are the foundation of Windows 8's picture password feature.

The big news this week regarding Microsoft's upcoming Windows 8 software was that it features picture passwords, something that drew widespread attention but also some skepticism.

QUIZ: 2011 Tech News Quiz?

A Microsoft product manager says: "At its core, your picture password is comprised of two complementary parts. There is a picture from your picture collection and a set of gestures that you draw upon it. Instead of having you pick from a canned set of Microsoft images, you provide the picture, because it increases both the security and the memorability of the password. You get to decide the content of the picture and the portions that are important to you. Plus, you get to see a picture that is important to you just like many people do on their phone lock screen."?

Picture password is a toy

The major downside of the picture password is that drawing a finger across a photo on a touch screen is easy to video record from a distance - making it relatively easy to compromise, says Kenneth Weiss, who invented SecurID tokens and now runs a three-factor authentication business called Universal Secure Registry. Designers of alpha-numeric passwords recognize this danger and have responded to it by having password characters appear as dots on the screen so the password can't be copied down.

"I think it's cute," he says. "I don't think it's serious security."?

Windows 8 to drive touchscreen sales

According to unnamed sources, makers of LCD touchscreens are expecting a spike in sales toward the end of 2012 in part thanks to the expected release of Windows 8, which capitalizes on touchscreen navigation and commands, including the above-mentioned picture password. Screen makers ViewSonic and Asustek say they expect vendors will be eager to launch touch monitors next year, all according to Digitimes.

Nokia tablet for Windows 8 rumor

Nokia is rumored to be making a tablet designed for Windows 8 that it will unveil at Nokia Connection 2012 in mid-June. That's the extent of the rumor as repeated by Stefan Constantinescu at intomobile.com. He says he's relaying what was posted at the DGui blog, which has since been hacked and remains down. The source of this rumor? Someone with a Finnish IP address who claims to work for Finland-based Nokia.

Nokia tablet for Windows 8 concept design

Over at concept-phones.com a posting lays down specs for a Windows 8 tablet designed by someone identified as Cameron McKinnon. Here's a taste of what he calls for: "Nokia Tab uses a massive 14.3 inch display, a 12 megapixel camera with Xenon flash and Carl Zeiss lens, plus Microsoft Kinect motion capture support through a front camera. The gadget is 12mm in thickness, it has 1GB of memory, a 64GB or 128GB HDD and it will be available in WiFi or WiFi + 4G models, if it's ever made."

Windows 8 a Top Tech for 2012

IEEE Spectrum Magazine has listed Windows 8 among the Top Tech for 2012, alongside 4G wireless, 3D printers, Chinese supercomputers, LED lighting and electric vehicle charging stations. Of Windows 8, IEEE Spectrum writes: "Microsoft has so far been sidelined by the industry-wide move to mobile platforms, such as smart phones and tablets. This new operating system is the Redmond, Wash., company's last, best hope to turn things around."

Twitter releases code for encrypting Android texts; Swype updates Beta (Appolicious)

When Twitter acquired Whisper Systems last month it was unclear what their intentions were for the encryption software maker. But a release from Twitter this week sheds some light on their goals with Whisper?s TextSecure. Released on Github as an open source project, TextSecure is now available for developers to use for SMS encryption on Android devices. Encryption can be added for all sent and received texts from an Android phone, and can encrypt texts for transmission if they?re being sent to another TextSecure user.

It?s part of Twitter?s goals to provide a more secure experience for Android texts, which are often used for sending in updates to Twitter. In appealing to the developer community, Twitter?s also doing what it knows best ? getting others to build out the service. Twitter has plans to make Whisper?s other software projects open source as well, though no details on expected release dates have been revealed. One of the more revered technologies from Whisper is WhisperCore 0.5, which offers an array of security tools for the Nexus S and Nexus One Android handsets.

Swype brings Dragon Dictate to Android

Twitter?s not the only one updating software for Android. Swype rolled out a major update to its beta this week, marking its first big revision since it was acquired by Nuance earlier this year. Taking advantage of its new parent company, Swype has incorporated Nuance?s flagship Dragon Dictate technology into its keyboard, in place of Google?s voice recognition tool. This is also the first time Dragon?s been available on Android, limited to iOS devices until now. Swype supports English, French, German, Italian and Spanish, with more languages expected for next year. Their language algorithm, always being tweaked, has been improved to better predict what you?re trying to say, learning your speech patterns and remembering phrases for later use.

Nuance, which is rumored to have contributed some of its technology to the iPhone 4S?s Siri tool, is making headway on Android?s OS. The race to launch Siri-like technology on Android phones has brought an onslaught of releases, and even speculation that Google?s working on its own Siri competitor in a project called Majel. Nuance is putting itself in a pretty good position to deeply incorporate more speech recognition and tasks with Android devices, especially by using Swype?s widely used app.

Toymaker sues Asus over Transformer tablet

In other Android news, it seems no one is safe from copyright infringement lawsuits. Asus is under assault from Hasbro, which is suing the Android tablet maker over their latest Transformer Prime device. If you?ve seen the Transformer movies in recent years (or are a child of the ?80s), you know that Optimus Prime is a lead character from the Transformers family, though it?s doubtful many consumers would expect Asus? tablet to re-configure itself into a talking robot. The Transformer Prime?s most futuristic feat is support for Android 4.0 Ice Cream Sandwich, a first for Android tablets on the market.

The carrier, operating under bankruptcy protection, will replace turboprop planes at Dallas-Fort Worth International Airport with Embraer 44-seat and 50-seat jets.

American Eagle CEO Dan Garton on Tuesday notified employees of the changes, taking effect by Jan. 31, as the carrier seeks to streamline operations. The airline's parent, Fort Worth-based AMR Corp., filed for Chapter 11 bankruptcy protection last month.

American Eagle uses turboprop planes to serve airports within about an hour's flight of DFW, including College Station, Longview, Lubbock, Killeen, San Angelo, Tyler, Waco and Wichita Falls.

The turboprop planes will be returned to a leasing company.

American Eagle last week stopped hiring new pilots.

Report: Health insurance costs inflating

There are historic rates of inflation for health care insurance according to an annual report by Citizen Action of Wisconsin. The group and lawmakers unveiled the findings on a conference call?Tuesday. The report finds that Wisconsin health insurance premiums have increased 182 percent over the last decade compared to 164 percent nationally. ?

Executive Director Robert Kraig?said Madison ranked best in terms of cost and quality. The report says Milwaukee and southeast Wisconsin, with a large number of for-profit insurance companies, had high costs with low quality. Areas with non-profit providers had higher quality but in the case of La Crosse coverage was very pricy. Kraig cited a lack of competition for the high costs in that city.

Democratic Congressman Ron Kind said health care exchanges ? part of the Affordable Care Act ? will bring more competition into his district and smaller markets, thus driving down costs.

Federal health reform requires Wisconsin to begin setting up these health insurance networks in 2012. But State Senate Democrat?Jon Erpenbach said ?it?s troubling,? the Walker administration is ?not working? with the federal government dealing with this issue.

Governor Walker has said he wants a ?free market? approach to care and earlier this year accepted a federal grant to begin implementing health exchanges.

Meanwhile?Wisconsin is participating in a multi-state lawsuit against the Affordable Care Act due to its provision which mandates people to buy insurance. The U.S. Supreme Court is set to take up that action this spring.

U.S. withdrawal in Iraq rolls into final act (Reuters)

BAGHDAD (Reuters) ? American soldiers signed over their last military base to Iraqi officials on Friday with the U.S. troop pullout drawing to an swift end nearly nine years after the invasion that ousted Saddam Hussein.

The few thousand remaining U.S. troops are scheduled to leave Iraq before December 31, closing a U.S. military venture that cost the lives of nearly 4,500 U.S. soldiers and tens of thousands of Iraqis caught up in sectarian strife.

Iraqi and U.S. officials on Friday signed paperwork for the handover of Camp Adder with a ceremony marked by army bugle calls and the lowering of flags. Only about 4,000 American soldiers remain in the country, down from a peak of 170,000.

"We have turned the last page of the occupation," Hussein al-Asadi, an adviser for Prime Minister Nuri al-Maliki, said at the base, 300 km (185 miles) south of Baghdad.

Camp Adder, a former air base in southern Nasiriyah province, will be one of the last few handed over as troops head south to the Kuwaiti border, leaving behind them housing units, generators and other material they cannot take along.

In the last month Camp Adder had turned into a ghost town. A yard was filled recently with chairs, tables and furniture handed over to the Iraqi forces. Signing over the bases usually happens before the final transfer.

The more than 500 U.S. bases at the height of the war have been whittled to a handful with daily convoys of hundreds of trucks and U.S. military vehicles crossing southern Iraq into Kuwait.

U.S. soldiers ended combat missions in 2010 and have already handed over much of the security role to Iraqi forces, but the last troops pull out of an Iraq that is still confronting a stubborn insurgency and political uncertainty.

Many Iraqis welcome the end of the U.S. military presence but fret over whether Iraq's government will manage tense sectarian relations, a fragile political power-sharing deal and an economy in dire need of investment.

U.S. Defense Secretary Leon Panetta flew briefly into Baghdad on Thursday for a ceremony to officially end the war in Iraq, telling U.S. and Iraqi officials that the sacrifice was worth it to establish an independent, stable country.

Violence has fallen sharply since the days of the worst sectarian slaughter in 2006-2007, an uneasy political power-sharing government of Shi'ite Muslims, Sunni Muslims and Kurds is in place and foreign oil firms are helping Iraq ramp up production.

But tensions simmer close to the surface. Minority Sunnis who once ruled under Saddam are chafing against what they see as a majority Shi'ite-led government that has marginalized them outside of power-sharing.

Hundreds of police protected a provincial council building in restive Diyala province on Friday as about 500 Shi'ite protesters rallied for a third day against an attempt, by mainly Sunni politicians, to seek more provincial autonomy.

SENSE OF SOVEREIGNTY

Desire for more autonomy has been evident for years in Iraq's patchwork of sectarian, ethnic and tribal makeup, but the Diyala drive and a call from mostly Sunni Salahuddin province for more say are intensifying regional jostling as U.S. troops leave.

"The province is passing through a very critical moment with the U.S. military walking out," said teacher Talib Hassan, 35, protesting outside the Diyala council building. "The timing of this declaration of autonomy is just attempted rebellion.

In Falluja, the former heartland of an al Qaeda insurgency that suffered some of the most vicious fighting in the war, a few thousand Iraqis celebrated the withdrawal this week, with some burning U.S. flags and waving pictures of dead relatives.

Falluja became more than any other Iraqi city a symbol for the brutality of the war after the 2003 invasion. Some in Falluja still remember what they call there the "resistance" to U.S. military incursions.

"The occupiers are leaving and so do the tanks, fighter-jets and rifles," Ahmed al-Alwani, the Imam of al-Raqeeb mosque said in speech at Friday prayers. "Do you know why Falluja was first in celebrating the U.S. withdrawal? Because it was the first in resisting them."

Japan central bank says business confidence falls (AP)

TOKYO ? A key central bank survey showed Thursday that confidence at major Japanese manufacturers fell over the last quarter, as the export-reliant country battled a strong yen and an increasingly precarious global economy.

In the Bank of Japan's "tankan" survey of business sentiment, the main index for big manufacturers fell to minus 4, in the first deterioration in two quarters. Three months ago, it stood at 2.

The figure represents the percentage of companies saying business conditions are good minus those saying conditions are unfavorable, with 100 representing the best mood and minus 100 the worst.

The result is slightly worse than Kyodo News agency's average market forecast for a reading of minus 2.

Large manufacturers also don't expect to feel better anytime soon. The central bank forecasts the index to fall to minus 5 over the next three months.

Japan has been battling a strong yen, which has hit multiple historic highs this year against the dollar. Amid Europe's debt problems and economic uncertainty in the U.S., global investors have looked to the Japanese currency as a relatively safe haven.

But Japan relies on exports to drive growth, and the yen's appreciation has hit companies such as Toyota Motor Corp. and Sony Corp. hard. When the yen climbs, it reduces the value of exporters' overseas profits when repatriated to Japan.

That has forced companies to shift more production overseas, prompting worries about a hollowing out of Japanese industry.

The most pessimistic of the big manufacturing group was the electrical machinery sector ? including audio and video equipment ? which tumbled to minus 21 from minus 5. Companies doing business in petroleum products and heavy machinery also recorded big declines.

The auto industry, however, showed surprising resilience. Its index jumped seven points to 20, despite the yen and recent parts supply problems due to the flooding in Thailand.

Big non-manufacturers were feeling more optimistic as well. Their confidence index rose to 4 from 1 three months earlier.

The reading for medium-sized manufacturers was flat at minus 3, while the small manufacturers index improved to minus 8, up from minus 11.

The survey, which helps guide monetary policy, showed that large companies overall plan to boost capital spending by 1.4 percent this fiscal year through March 2012. The figure is down from 3 percent in the September survey.

Large manufacturing companies assume an average exchange rate of 79.02 yen per dollar for this fiscal year, compared with 81.15 yen three months ago.

Big companies expect profits to retreat 9 percent this fiscal year after jumping 46 percent last year.

The Bank of Japan surveyed 10,846 companies nationwide. About 99 percent responded.

The bank's next policy board meeting is scheduled for Tuesday and Wednesday.

French court convicts Chirac of corruption (AP)

PARIS ? A French court found former President Jacques Chirac guilty of embezzling public funds to illegally finance the conservative party he long led, in a historic verdict Thursday with repercussions for his legacy and France's political elite.

Chirac, a savvy world diplomat and icon of France's ruling establishment for decades, will not go behind bars but was handed a two-year suspended sentence that goes on his criminal record. Anti-corruption crusaders, long frustrated by dirty dealings in the French political machine, rejoiced at the conviction.

He's the first former French head of state to face prosecution since the World War II era. But the 79-year-old former leader did not take part in the trial, after doctors determined that he suffers severe memory lapses.

The court said Thursday it had found Chirac guilty in two related cases involving fake jobs created at the RPR party, which he led during his 1977-1995 tenure as Paris mayor. He was convicted of embezzling public funds, abuse of trust, and illegal conflict of interest.

Chirac repeatedly denied wrongdoing. It took years to get him to trial because he enjoyed immunity from prosecution during his 1995-2007 presidential tenure, during which he led France into the shared euro currency and became the global champion of opposition to the U.S.-led invasion of Iraq.

The court said it took into account his age, health and status as a former head of state when determining the light sentence.

Unusually, the prosecutor had requested that Chirac and the nine other defendants in the complex two-part case be acquitted, saying not enough evidence proved intentional corruption. The court disagreed, saying his guilt results "from long-standing and reiterated practices" of illegal party financing.

Chirac's adopted daughter fought back tears as she lamented the ruling.

"The justice system has been very severe, but this is a fair and independent justice system. For the family, it's a great pain we have to accept," said Chirac's adopted daughter Anh Dao Traxel, her voice cracking with emotion as she spoke to reporters outside the courtroom.

"I think this decision is too, too severe for him and our family has more than ever to show solidarity and be supportive, for his health for the rest of his life," said Traxel, a former Vietnamese boat person. Chirac and his wife formally adopted Traxel after she came to Paris in 1979.

Chirac spokeswoman Benedicte Brissart declined to comment immediately, saying time was needed to go over the decision.

Chirac lawyer Georges Kiejman called the ruling disappointing and said he expected a decision later Thursday on whether Chirac would appeal.

"We have to take a step back and read this ruling, we have to speak of course with the main person involved (Chirac), and we will know tonight if he accepts this decision," Kiejman said. "What I hope is that this ruling doesn't change in any way the deep affection the French feel legitimately for Jacques Chirac."

The ruling is certain to bruise Chirac's public image. Leaving office in 2007 did wonders for his popularity: while polls showed that he was unpopular in his final years as president, those numbers soared afterward ? and even today, the avuncular former leader, who now focuses on charitable work, has been one of France's most popular public figures.

Critics had pushed for years to see Chirac answer charges of illegal party financing, frustrated by his presidential immunity and a sense that the political machine would never let the sensitive trial come to pass.

Jerome Karsenti, a lawyer for the anti-corruption group Anticor, which had argued against Chirac as a civil party to the case, said the reverberations could be widespread for France's political elites.

"This is a strong message from the court ? a message to all politicians of responsibility. It's also proof of a mature and transparent democracy that is today able to make a distinction and try a former president," Karsenti said.

"I see it as a historic and very important decision for the future of French democracy," he said.

The latest baring of France's underworld of back-room cronyism, corruption and political wrongdoing could loom large in voters minds as the French cast ballots in presidential and legislative elections next year.

The party that succeeded the RPR, President Nicolas Sarkozy's UMP party, and the opposition Socialist Party have seen their share of scandal recently. Two longtime Sarkozy allies have been targeted since September in a case of suspected kickbacks in a 1990s French defense deal with Pakistan. Sarkozy served as budget minister at the time, but his office and allies insist he was not involved.

In Thursday's ruling, the court found that 19 totally or partially fake jobs were created to benefit Chirac. "The case and the debates established that Jacques Chirac was the initiator and principal author of crimes of abuse of trust, embezzling and illegal conflict of interest," the ruling said.

A career politician, Chirac was a debonair master of the workings of public office. He modeled himself after longtime French leader Charles de Gaulle and was nicknamed "Le Bulldozer" early in his career for his determination and ambition.

France's last leader with memories of World War II, Chirac was the first to acknowledge the nation's responsibility for the deportation of Jews during the Holocaust. But he struggled to achieve reforms to the regulated economy and failed to defuse tensions between police and minority youth that exploded into riots in 2005.
