Silence Therapeutics gets German approval for cancer drug trial

(Reuters) - Biotech research and development company Silence Therapeutics said it received approval from German authorities for trials of its pancreatic cancer drug and was reviewing financing options for an aggressive expansion.

Shares in the company rose as much as 20 percent on the London Stock Exchange on Tuesday.

The trials will test Silence's ATU027 compound, which prevents the spread of cancer from one organ to another, in combination with Gemcitabine, an anti-tumor drug.

Silence also said latest studies have shown that its new lipid formulation, DBTC, is effective for RNAi (ribonucleic acid interference) treatments to liver tissues.

The company said it was actively looking at an aggressive expansion of its platform, drug targets and key personnel.

Silence said the Federal Institute for Drugs and Medical Devices (BfArM) in Germany had encouraged the company to apply the trials as a combination therapy for a wide range of cancers.

Bloomberg: Verizon seeking to end Vodafone partnership through merger or buyout

Bloomberg Verizon seeking to resolve Vodafone partnership

Whether the two simply call the whole thing off or become a single unified company, Vodafone and Verizon could be "resolving" their relationship very soon according to Bloomberg. The oft-cited "people familiar with the situation" say that Verizon is considering ending its joint venture with Vodafone by purchasing back the 45 percent stake the European carrier currently holds in its American cousin. Another possible, though less likely, outcome is that Vodafone and Verizon could merge to form a single entity. Though, sources claim that previous talks towards that goal have hit roadblocks over leadership and headquarters location. The move would give Verizon slightly more power and freedom in the wireless market while allowing Vodafone to shed some its overseas weight. Vodafone CEO Vittorio Colao has made it obvious that he's eager to sell off its non-controlling stakes in other operators. At the moment it doesn't appear that formal negotiations have begun, but the two companies have apparently had high-level talks about their various options over the last few months. Obviously we'll be keeping an eye out for more information and you can hit up the source link for a few more details.

How to Market Yourself Using Social Media and the Internet

How to Market Yourself Using Social Media and the Internet

Posted on Mon, Mar 04, 2013 @ 12:47 PM

We talk a lot about how to market your company via social media and the internet. But how about marketing yourself? I would argue that with the advent of social media, every person has the opportunity to become their own brand. Whether you are looking for a job, keeping your resume current, or a business owner, building your brand online is equally important.

In order to be visible to others, you should be a part of at least a few social media networks. Some of the most popular for professionals are of course Facebook, and also LinkedIn and Twitter. Having a personal website or blog is a great idea as well, depending on what you are trying to market yourself for.

Here are some reasons that you should have a presence on social media and build your personal brand:

Facebook ? Facebook offers a unique opportunity in that you can promote yourself and your business in several different ways. In order to build your personal brand, you should have your personal page up to date. Include what you do for work. Keep your page work-appropriate ? now is the time to delete any unflattering photos from college where you may or may not be holding a red plastic cup and/or doing something that you wouldn?t want your professional connections to see. Some people choose to make a second Facebook page just for professional connections, but beware, this violates the terms of service for the site and can cause both of your pages to be shut down.

GRM BlogLinkedIn ? I recently wrote a post detailing how to keep your LinkedIn profile current. It?s important for your profile to be complete if you want potential employers to consider you. Many employers are turning to LinkedIn to check out an applicant?s job history. LinkedIn also gives you the opportunity to be a bit more creative. When building a personal brand, it?s great to show your personality. While you definitely want to showcase your professional accomplishments, people should be able to see that you are a human, and an interesting one, on the other side of the computer.

Twitter ? since Twitter only allows for short, 140 character posts, it?s a great place to post interesting links, articles, photos, or infographics that you find. These can be related to your personal interests or your profession. This way, people can see that you take the time to be knowledgeable about what is going on in the world. You can also use Twitter to communicate with professional connections as well as companies that you might be interested in working for.

A website or blog ? having a website or blog can help you build your personal brand by letting people learn more about you in a broader way. Your website can include samples of your work, places you?ve been published, even personal anecdotes or recipes. Anything to build your web presence. A blog has similar uses; even a personal blog helps to expand your online repertoire.

It?s a good idea to work on building your personal brand even if you are not currently seeking employment. You never know what opportunities may come your way through this different form of networking. It?s nice to be able to refer people to your online pages without having to worry about cleaning them up or updating them before they are seen. By keeping everything up to date, you will be in a great position to show off your talents.

Call for Chapters: Library and Information Science Research in Asia ...

SECOND CALL FOR CHAPTER PROPOSALS

Proposal Submission Deadline:?March 31, 2013 (extended)

Title:?Library and Information Science Research in Asia-Oceania: Theory and Practice

A book edited by

Dr. Jia Tina Du (University of South Australia, Australia)

Professor Qinghua Zhu (Nanjing University, China)

Professor Andy Koronios (University of South Australia, Australia)

Introduction:

The book?Library and Information Science Research in Asia-Oceania: Theory and Practice?seeks to present the development and trends in library and information science (LIS) research, both theoretically and practically, in the Asia-Oceania region. Two major trends have occurred nowadays in the LIS field across Asia-Oceania, including a growth in the number of schools and expansion of programs, and a growth in research outputs. The LIS education growth is more significant in the Asian countries, particularly in China and India. The Directory of Library & Information Science Programs in Asia shows that there are 67 universities having LIS programs in China. The numbers of LIS schools in India, Indonesia, Japan, South Korea, and Singapore are 86, 11, 8, 5, and 1, respectively. Australia and New Zealand have been fairly stable in LIS education growth compared to Asia, but they provide significant distance education and training programs. Historically, the major centres of the world producing LIS research have largely been the universities and information institutions in North America, the United Kingdom, and Europe. However, accompanying the growth of the Asian economies, universities, and information industries, LIS research being conducted and published in the Asia-Oceania region is increasing rapidly. Up to 2011, there were totally 377,649 LIS document records in the database Web of Science, and approximately 12,000 of them were written by Asia-Oceania region researchers.

Overall, the LIS field in the Asia-Oceania region is experiencing prominent growth, and the trends of development are worth exploring. This book will provide a timely look at LIS research development and practice in Asia-Oceania as the region continues to grow and develop. It will provide an ideal forum for this international research area, allowing a presentation and comparison of international history and trends in LIS research, along with an investigation of reasons for similarities and differences in the outcomes. As such, this book will be a significant contribution to the LIS research literature.

The book chapters will take critical and historical approaches as well as contemporary analysis. Authors are invited to submit chapters based on original research that has not been published elsewhere.??We are seeking high quality and scholarly book chapters that cover the evolution of LIS research and developments in theory and practice in the Asia-Oceania region, including research progress in the field, evolution of theory development and, where applicable, their practical applications and significance, and the impact of information technologies on the development of the field.??

Objective of the Book:

The main goal of the publication is to bring together theories and practices development, achievements, and challenges in international LIS studies. This book will assemble researchers from the major LIS schools in Asia and Oceania to disseminate and discuss the changing nature of the research, the major advances, and practical development in the field. The book will demonstrate evolving and emerging research and practice development in diverse countries in the region. It will highlight the current concerns and issues surrounding both theory and practice. This book is expected to be an excellent collection and representation of Asian and Oceanian LIS research and practice today.

Target Audience:

This book is intended as a useful resource for library and information science researchers, scholars, students, professionals, and practitioners, and is an appropriate text for courses in library and information science. In addition, anyone interested in understanding the LIS field in the region will find this book a fascinating and enlightening read.

How To Wring Every Drop Of Blood Out Of Virtually Ideal Business ...

by Coach Gayle Buske

One challenge faced by anyone participating in a high-quality coaching program, like Team Double-Click Coaching, attending a seminar, reading a business or self-improvement book, etc., is how to take the seemingly endless cascade of great information and organize it so it?s useful.

I am a HUGE believer in self-education and coaching.? School is never out for the professional.? And I?m a convert of my own preaching.? As I write this I am part of a business coaching program, I subscribe to several advanced-level direct response marketing newsletters and audio CD programs, many trade journals, and I attend business and marketing conferences every year.? This is on top of the information I research and gather from Strategic Alliance partners who appear on coaching calls and as guest experts in the various publications put out by Team Double-Click Coaching.? And THAT?S on top of all the ideas I get on my own.

That?s a HUGE stream of information!

But do I get overwhelmed?? No.? And one reason is because I have a very simple system for gathering all the ?nuggets? that will make a difference in my business and in YOUR business, and organizing them so I can access the exact strategy or idea at a moment?s notice.

Here?s what I do:

First, whenever I?m doing self-education (reading a newsletter, on a teleseminar, attending a seminar, listening to an audio CD) I always have a 8?11 legal pad handy.? I use post-it tabs to create dividers that separate the pad into topic sections.? On each tab I write the name of each topic.

Here are some recommendations:
??Marketing
??Systems/Administration
??Home Advisor ideas
??Resources
? Quotes/Self improvement

Each time I fill up a notepad, I tear out the pages, punch holes in them, and put them in a 3-ring binder that has divider tabs which correspond to the? post-it tabs.

How to take notes when you?re driving

I?m a huge proponent of listening to marketing and business CD?s while driving.? It turns wasted driving time into learning time, transforming your car into a ?Marketing University on Wheels.?? To make sure I capture all the useful nuggets, I use the voice recorder feature on my phone (you could also keep a small, hand-held digital recorder in your car).? Each time I hear something I want to remember, I press record and take verbal notes.? Sometimes I?ll just let the recorder pick up what?s being said on the CD.? Then once every couple of weeks I sit down with my notepad and write the nuggets into the appropriate section.

Now any time I need ideas on any topic, I can simply flip through my notebook and?Voila!? All organized so I can quickly find what I need.? I?m absolutely, positively never at a loss for marketing ideas, self-improvement, quotes, etc.

You should do the same thing.

Another benefit of going through an active note-taking process is that it helps you internalize the concepts much more quickly than simply listening passively.

Bangladesh deploys army after more violence over tribunal

DHAKA (Reuters) - Bangladesh deployed troops on Sunday to a town where eight people were killed in clashes between police and Islamist party supporters protesting against the conviction of party leaders on charges stemming from the country's 1971 independence war.

Bangladesh has been rocked by protests and counter-protests since January, when a tribunal set up by the government to investigate abuses during the war of independence against Pakistan handed down its first conviction, sentencing a leader of the Jamaat-e-Islami party in absentia to death.

Jamaat-e-Islami opposed Bangladeshi independence from Pakistan in the 1971 war. The authorities have accused several of its leaders of committing atrocities including rape and murder during the conflict, which the party denies.

About 60 people, including six policemen, have been killed in protests since the tribunal's third conviction on Thursday, when another member of the Islamist party, Delwar Hossain Sayedee, 73, was sentenced to death.

He denied charges of atrocities including rape and murder, and his lawyer said he would appeal.

On Sunday, the government appealed to have a life-imprisonment sentence on another Jamaat leader, Abdul Quader Mollah, replaced by a death sentence. Many Bangladeshis, mostly youths, have staged street protests for a month demanding the death penalty for Mollah and others facing war crimes charges.

On February 17, parliament amended a law allowing the state to appeal any verdict in war crimes trials it deems inadequate.

RUBBER BULLETS, TEAR GAS

Thousands of Jamaat-e-Islami activists took to the streets of Bogra town, 220 km (140 miles) north of the capital, Dhaka, on Sunday and attacked police with crude bombs, swords and sticks, police and witnesses said.

They stormed a police station, set fire to houses including those of leaders of the ruling Awami League party and minority Hindus, and pulled away train lines disrupting rail services in several districts, police and reporters said.

"We had to open fire after rubber bullets and teargas failed to disperse the attackers," police officer Atiur Rahman told Reuters over phone from Bogra.

An army spokesman in Dhaka said two platoons of troops had been deployed in Bogra, where eight people, of them three women, were killed on Sunday. Eight others, including a policeman, died in clashes elsewhere and scores were wounded, according to reports from police.

In some places, authorities imposed a ban on public gatherings in fear of more violence and ordered stepped up night patrols by security forces.

RIVAL WOMEN

Bogra is a political stronghold of Begum Khaleda Zia, head of the main opposition Bangladesh Nationalist Party (BNP) and arch rival of Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina.

The two women have shaped the country's politics since 1991, both serving terms as prime minister followed by spells in opposition. They routinely accuse each other of political vengeance and provoking violence.

Sunday was the first day of a three-day strike called by the Jamaat-e-Islami and the BNP.

Hasina set up the tribunal in 2010 to investigate abuses during the war, in which Bangladeshi authorities say about 3 million civilians were killed. Thousands of women were raped.

The two opposition parties say the prime minister is using the tribunal to persecute them. The government denies that and says justice must be served.

The tribunal has been criticized by rights groups for failing to adhere to international standards. Human Rights Watch said lawyers, witnesses and investigators reported they had been threatened.

Bangladesh became part of Pakistan at the end of British colonial rule in 1947. The country, then known as East Pakistan, won independence with India's help in December 1971 following a nine-month war against the rest of Pakistan.

Some factions in Bangladesh opposed the break with Pakistan, including the Jamaat-e-Islami.

The overwhelmingly Muslim south Asian country of 160 million people is likely see more violence in the run-up to parliamentary elections in January, in which both Hasina and Khaleda will again compete for power.
