I suppose I should be used to these types of microaggressions since they are still pretty common even after being a widow for almost nine years, but these comments still hurt in many ways.? WASHINGTON (AP) ? A panel of cancer experts rejected an experimental Merck drug for a rare form of cancer on Tuesday while recommending approval of a GlaxoSmithKline treatment for the same disease. Neither drug appears to help patients live longer, but panelists said Glaxo's Votrient helped delay tumor growth in the most vulnerable patients.

The FDA panel reviewed the two drugs submitted to treat sarcoma, a rare class of tumors that form in the fat, muscles and bone in the limbs and abdomen. An estimated 11,000 people in the U.S. were diagnosed with the soft tissue cancer in 2011 and 3,900 died from the disease, according to the National Cancer Institute.

Many cancer drugs approved by the FDA do not actually extend survival, but instead slow the growth of tumors or their spread to other parts of the body. In recent years, cancer experts have debated the significance of such results, particularly given the potentially dangerous side effects.

The panel voted 11-2 that the benefits of Glaxo's pill Votrient outweighed its risks, noting there are few other treatment options for patients.

"There are no drugs approved by the FDA specifically for this indication and that's what drove my decision to vote yes," said Dr. Mikkael Sekeres of the Cleveland Clinic.

GlaxoSmithKline plc, based in the U.K., studied Votrient in sarcoma patients whose cancer has spread to other parts of the body after unsuccessful treatment with chemotherapy drugs, the standard treatment for the disease. Such patients usually survive only a year to 18 months.

While patients taking Votrient didn't live longer than those taking chemotherapy alone, they did see a three-month delay in growth of their tumors, on average. Some patients experienced an even longer delay, which panelists said supported the drug's benefit.

"I feel the effect is marginal but there does appear to be a group of patients who have benefited from this for longer periods of time," said panel chair Dr. Wyndham Wilson of the National Cancer Institute.

The panel saw less potential for Merck's ridaforolimus, which the company acquired through Ariad Pharmaceuticals Inc. The group voted 13-1 against the drug, saying its significant side effects ? which affected 60 percent of patients ? outweighed its benefits.

Merck & Co. Inc. of Whitehouse Station, N.J., submitted the drug as a maintenance therapy, meaning it would be used to help repress sarcoma of the bone and tissue in patients whose cancer is already in remission. Since such patients are healthier than patients with active disease, panelists said they wanted to see a more dramatic benefit to justify putting patients on a drug with major side effects. The FDA has only approved a handful of cancer drugs for maintenance use.

Company trials showed no survival benefit and a meager seven-week delay in disease progression compared with patients not taking the drug. Panelists were also troubled by the high rate of side effects in patients, which led 14 percent to drop out of the study. Side effects included lung irritation, kidney failure and high blood pressure

"I didn't see anything that would indicate it should be recommended based on the information we have today," said Lee Helman of the National Cancer Institute.

The FDA is scheduled to make a decision on Glaxo's drug by May 6 and Merck's drug by June 5.

LHP Andy Pettitte makes comeback, rejoins Yankees

TAMPA, Fla. (AP) ? Pitcher Andy Pettitte has ended his one-year retirement and is making a comeback with the New York Yankees.

The Yankees announced Friday that Pettitte had signed a minor league deal with an invitation to big league spring training. If added to the major league roster, Pettitte would get a $2.5 million, one-year contract.

Yankees general manager Brian Cashman said there are no incentives in the deal and that Pettitte ? who is expected in camp Tuesday ? will only be a starter.

Cashman believes Pettitte will not be ready to break camp with the team when spring training ends early next month.

The 39-year-old Pettitte last played in 2010. The left-hander sat out last season, but was with the Yankees in camp this spring as an instructor. He threw batting practice several times, and also had a private bullpen session for team officials, including Cashman, manager Joe Girardi and pitching coach Larry Rothschild last Tuesday.

Pettitte first expressed interest in pitching again last December.

Pettitte is 240-138 lifetime. In his last season with the Yankees, he was an All-Star and went 11-3.

For many years, Pettitte was an ace for the Yankees and one of their most dependable pitchers in the postseason. He is 19-10 with a 3.83 ERA in 42 career postseason starts.

A Minute With: Susan Sarandon on new film, single life

LOS ANGELES (Reuters) - Academy Award-winning actress Susan Sarandon plays a widow disappointed in her sons and unhappy with her life in new film comedy, "Jeff Who Lives at Home," in U.S. theaters on Friday.

The film stars Jason Segel as Jeff, a directionless, pot-smoking man who lives in his mother's (Sarandon) basement. Meanwhile estranged brother, Pat (Ed Helms) is convinced his wife (Judy Greer) is cheating on him.

Directed by Jay and Mark Duplass, the film follows Jeff during one day as he embarks on a new path down the road of life upon which he is convinced the cosmic universe has set -- thanks to a series of odd signs.

Sarandon sat down with Reuters to talk about the film, having sons smoking weed at home and what life has been like as a single woman since splitting with Tim Robbins three years ago.

Q: What made you decide to star in a low-budget, independent movie like this one?

A: "I loved all the twists and turns and I was moved by the reconciliation of the family. I was also moved by the questions Jeff is asking. Every film is a different universe, and I thought this would be a fun universe to drop in on."

Q: Most of your time on screen is spent in an office environment while your 'sons' have their own storyline. Did you feel isolated from the rest of the cast during shooting?

A: "She's kind of isolated anyway, that's the point. Everybody in that family has become estranged from each other and is isolated. Even though Jeff is living downstairs, he's on some kind of nocturnal schedule and she's going off to work and really upset she's not able to have fun. But I felt connected to Jason and Ed probably because I saw them off the set."

Q: You have two boys of your own - Jack and Miles. Although they are a younger than Jeff and Pat, did you see any of yourself or your boys in this on-screen family?

A: "No, but my boys in real life are on their journeys too, trying to find a philosophy that gets them off the track of feeling they have to be successful. They have questions because they're sons of famous people, which can be a drag. And they're both artists so they're trying to understand that age old dilemma of art and commerce. I don't mind if they live in the basement, take a stupid job or smoke some weed while they're figuring it out."

Q: Really?

A: "I would rather have them smoking weed than drinking. But I was very clear with my kids that some drugs can kill you the very first time you try them. They're all illegal. At least something that grows and is a leaf is not the same as methamphetamine. You can't just lump them all together. But what I said to my kids was that to have a drink or to smoke, to get a break from your life and to relax is one thing. If you're smoking from the time you wake up, you will not have a life to have a break from. The important thing is to talk about it."

Q: You share a special kiss in this film that may shock certain moviegoers. Were you nervous shooting it?

A: "Not at all. I've been there before on film. I think it's more about the bravery involved with relationships - whether or not you're going to be vulnerable to another person, whether or not you ever want to be intimate with another person. The age, the color is just a detail. It's making that leap in extending yourself to another person."

Q: Physically? Sexually? Emotionally?

A: "It's the connection that's important, I think, as a woman. I love sex, but sex without connection for me is not interesting. When a guy says, 'It was nothing, it was just sex,' I believe that's true for him. It doesn't work that way for me. I could have just sex, but I'm interested in connection."

Q: In 2009 you and your sons' father, Tim Robbins, ended a 21 year partnership. How has it been being on your own?

A: "It's been a lot of different things. It's traumatic and exhilarating. The one thing that's been really clear to me is that you have to think of your own life and your relationship and everything as a living organism. It's constantly moving, changing, growing. I think long-term relationships need to be constantly reevaluated and talked about."

Q: Some people in similar situations feel that they've failed to keep the relationship together. Did you?

A: "Of course you feel like a failure. It's a big deal but again, it's an opportunity to grow. At the end of my first marriage (in 1979 to Chris Sarandon), it was about the loss of ideal, about who you thought this person was. I thought love conquered all and I had to reevaluate everything. And you need your girlfriends, you need to take long, long walks until you're exhausted and no longer freaking out and you hold on until a new dawn. Then you get another chance."

Q: After your marriage ended, you vowed to never marry again. Your daughter (Eva Amurri, 26, whose father is filmmaker Franco Amurri) was married last fall. How was that for you?

A: "She's brilliant. Her views about a lot of things are obviously different than mine. I don't know if that's in reaction to me or that's just the way she came in. She's always been really clear about what she wants, what she doesn't want and she has executed her life in way to move toward that. She's picked the right guy who has the same goals and strategies of life. It's not been traumatic at all. The wedding was fun."

Monsanto tests drought-tolerant biotech corn

BISMARCK, N.D. (AP) ? Seed giant Monsanto Co. plans large-scale tests this year of the first government-approved biotech crop developed to deal with drought.

The new corn is being introduced as much of the U.S. remains abnormally dry and areas in the South and Southwest still face severe drought. Monsanto says the corn won't be a panacea for drought-stricken farmers but when combined with improved agricultural practices could help those in areas like the western Great Plains, where production without irrigation can be half as much as the national average.

The St. Louis-based company plans on-farm trials from South Dakota to Texas to quantify how well the corn works before releasing it commercially next year. Farmers in areas like western Kansas, which gets about half of the annual rainfall enjoyed by the eastern half of the state, are eager for the results.

"We're not in a very wet country here," said Harvey Heier, who has a farm near Grainfield, Kan. "It would be a big plus ... if it works."

Monsanto developed the corn with a gene taken from a bacterium commonly found in soil and vegetation. The U.S. Department of Agriculture decided against regulating it late last year, essentially approving it for commercial release. The decision is notable because it marks the first time USDA's Animal and Plant Health Inspection Service has approved a product that has been genetically engineered to resist drought, rather than a pest or herbicide.

The agency says the corn is safe. Its analysis concluded the corn wasn't likely to harm the environment, people or animals and wouldn't boost corn production at the expense of grasslands and forest, said Michael Gregoire, deputy administrator of APHIS's Biotechnology Regulatory Services.

Doug Gurian-Sherman, senior scientist for the Union of Concerned Scientists' Food and Environment Program, said there's no reason to think the corn might be unsafe, though he and Bill Freese at the Center for Food Safety say they wish there were more stringent testing and regulation of biotech crops. USDA said last November that it plans to speed up regulatory reviews of biotech crops even more by streamlining the process, cutting in half the average approval time of three years. New guidelines could be published as early as this month.

Officials in the corn and ethanol industries say drought-tolerant corn could help meet the dramatic increase in demand for the grain used to make both food and fuel. Public consumption of corn-based products has more than doubled in the past 30 years, while the ethanol industry's demand for corn has doubled in the past five years, according to the USDA and Renewable Fuels Association.

It's not clear whether Monsanto's corn will actually boost production. The APHIS analysis prepared by Gregoire says field trial results showing more corn grown per acre under dry conditions aren't statistically significant but suggest the corn would do well in drought.

But the analysis also notes some conventionally bred varieties have drought tolerance and "to some extent, all U.S. corn varieties have been becoming more drought resistant over time."

Companies such as Pioneer Hi-Bred, a DuPont business, have introduced drought-tolerant corn developed through conventional and molecular breeding. No company but Monsanto has petitioned APHIS for approval of a genetically engineered drought-tolerant trait, spokesman R. Andre Bell said.

While Monsanto touts the variety developed with German chemical company BASF as "the industry's first biotech drought solution," it's also been careful to limit expectations. The corn, which is being marketed under the name DroughtGard, is aimed at areas of the U.S. suffering moderate drought and is not currently part of the company's effort to help bring drought-tolerant corn to parched areas of Africa.

"This isn't a product that we're expecting to grow in the desert," Monsanto spokeswoman Danielle Stuart said. "You still need water and nutrients."

Mark Edge, Monsanto's drought marketing specialist, cautioned that while field trials were promising, they were limited. This year's tests, involving as many as 250 growers in six states, should provide better information about where and how well it works, he said.

"We don't see this as an end; this is a beginning to understanding how we can use the tools of biotechnology to interact in this complex arena of yield and (drought) stress," Edge said. "We expect that our pipeline will have many more (products) that we bring forward."

Gurian-Sherman predicted the corn will be "a Band-Aid, not a cure," providing "modest" benefit on only about one-fifth of the U.S. corn acres that are in areas of frequent drought.

"I don't think it's useless technology ... (but) we shouldn't have an expectation that this technology is going to solve our drought problems in the foreseeable future ? at least severe droughts," he said.

They are also cheap, and they do not require a lot of equipment, what is needed is a mat and some fitting, comfortable clothing those are the essentials although for iyengar exercises, there are additional equipments which, are required. Yoga exercises are very fruitful, and they are simple but all participants should be disciplined.

The purpose of yoga exercises varies according to the person using the techniques. Common uses are yoga for beginners and yoga poses for weight loss.
