London shares close lower ahead of Bernanke speech

London shares closed lower on Thursday amid growing anxiety ahead of a keynote speech on Friday by US Federal Reserve Board chairman Ben Bernanke, traders said.

The benchmark FTSE 100 index ended the day down 24.08 points or 0.42 percent at 5,719.45.

An Italian bond auction produced lower yields but failed to impress investors, despite Prime Minister Mario Monti's claim that the markets are recognising his government's economic reforms .

"Rome may have been able to sell off government debt this morning at a lower level than in recent auctions, but it appears that everyone is opting to wait and see whether Ben Bernanke will deliver the goods tomorrow in his speech at Jackson Hole," said Chris Beauchamp, market analyst at IG Index.

US consumer spending came in as expected while jobless claims were unchanged at 374,000, perhaps the worst result, since it neither indicates an improving economy or boosts the case for more Fed stimulus, he said.

"The weight of expectation surrounding tomorrow's speech means that Mr Bernanke will have to drop some fairly strong hints if markets are not to snub their noses at his words and drop back from their recent highs," Beauchamp said.

Miners again took the brunt of the selling in the wake of falling commodity prices and gloomy recent predictions about future demand.

Kazakhmys was the worst hit, sinking 4.94 percent to 586.50 pence following negative broker comment. Anglo American dropped 3.44 percent to 1,753.50 pence, BHP Billiton lost 3.26 percent to 1,842 pence and Vedanta fell 3.15 percent to 357.45 pence.

Glencore shed 3.00 percent to 357.45 pence as Qatar Holding, one of the biggest holders in Xstrata, said it opposes the terms of the Swiss miner's proposed merger with the commodities trader and will vote against the deal.

Supermarket group William Morrison was the main gainer, adding 1.52 percent to 281 pence.

Sterling eased to $1.5784 at 4:22 pm from $1.5841 on Wednesday evening but was steady at 1.2630 euros versus 1.2632 euros a day earlier.

Obama to play up national security record at party meet

The Democratic Party will play up what it sees as President Barack Obama's shining national security credentials at its party convention next week, aides to the president said Wednesday.

The party will "highlight the significant role President Obama's strong record on national security and veterans issues" during the convention in Charlotte, North Carolina, which runs from next Tuesday to Thursday, said Adam Fletcher, a campaign spokesman.

Fletcher cited Obama accomplishments such as "ending the war in Iraq responsibly, to refocusing on al-Qaeda and decimating its leadership, to taking care of our men and women in uniform when they return home."

He said these themes would be touched on throughout the week but especially on its last evening Thursday in an address by Senator John Kerry, a former presidential candidate and foreign policy heavyweight.

A Vietnam veteran who lost to George W. Bush in 2004, Kerry is chairman of the Senate Foreign Relations committee.

Kerry has been mentioned often as a possible successor to Secretary of State Hillary Clinton if Obama defeats Republican challenger Mitt Romney in the November 6 election.

London set for Paralympics opener

Final preparations have begun for the London Paralympics opening ceremony, heralding 11 days of competition for athletes with disabilities.

Some 3,000 volunteers will take part in the event, which organisers have entitled Enlightenment.

Professor Stephen Hawking and actor Sir Ian McKellen will narrate the show, which is due to begin at 20:30 BST.

But there are doubts the Paralympic flame will arrive on time, as the torch relay is now more than two hours late.

Meanwhile, Malawi have withdrawn from the games due to lack of funding.

BBC political reporter Matthew Cole said organisers of the 24-hour long torch relay are "looking glum" about the delay to the torch relay.

A back-up flame was earlier created at City Hall, to make certain the opening ceremony could start as planned.

A spokesman for Games organisers Locog said: "Part of the flame has gone ahead to the stadium as a back-up contingency plan.

"The relay is going to continue."

The flame began its journey in Stoke Mandeville, the spiritual home of the Paralympic Games, on Tuesday night.

It will be carried by 580 torchbearers in total, and after being carried past some of London's most famous landmarks, will be used to light a scaled-down version of the Olympic cauldron.

UK Sport and the British Paralympic Association have set a minimum target of 103 medals this time from at least 12 sports, including swimming, athletics and rowing.

Human possibility

The opening ceremony - which will be broadcast on Channel 4 and BBC Radio 5 live - will signal the start of 11 days of competition by more than 4,000 athletes from 165 countries, including more than 300 athletes from ParalympicsGB.

Analysis

Backstage, organisers and volunteers are busily applying final touches to props and paraphernalia - a wipe-down of a flag pole here, a lick of paint to a prop there.

The ceremony explores the twin themes of reason and rights, and we're promised a journey of discovery, led by celebrated scientist Professor Stephen Hawking and Shakespeare's character Miranda from The Tempest.

The cast includes 73 deaf and disabled professional performers and also well-known names like Sir Ian McKellen as a Prospero-type character, singer Beverley Knight and 3,250 volunteers aged 10-80 from all over the world.

Organisers say the show is about challenging perceptions. There will be athletes, flags, royals and Tom Heatherwick's cauldron as expected.

There will also be a Hadron collider and a fly-by by Aerobility - a charity that trains disabled people to become pilots - and the humble apple is also playing a key role in proceedings.

"You all need to make sure you have an apple," said artistic director Jenny Sealey ahead of the ceremony. "Because everybody, 62,000 people in the audience will also have their apple.

"We're asking people on television to make sure they have their apple. We want to stage the biggest ever apple bite."

Paralympic organisers are looking to break records before the Games have even begun!

A capacity crowd of 80,000 people will watch the ceremony in Stratford, east London, which will be opened by the Queen and watched by the Duke and Duchess of Cambridge.

The start of the show will feature a flypast by Aerobility, a British charity that trains disabled people to become pilots.

Fifty specialist performers in the ceremony have taken part in an eight-week circus skills training programme in east London, and will take part in a high-wire act.

The show's two artistic directors have said the main themes of the ceremony will be empowerment and the challenging of perceptions of human possibility.

Prof Hawking - a world-renowned physicist who has motor neurone disease - will join Sir Ian McKellen to narrate a scientific "journey of discovery", inspired in part by Prof Hawking's own book A Brief History of Time.

The organisers have revealed that Prof Hawking will act as a guide to Miranda, a character from William Shakespeare's play The Tempest, through the show.

Sir Ian will play Prospero, another character from the play.

Jenny Sealey, co-artistic director said the audience will be taken on an "exquisite journey of discovery inspired by the wonder of science".

She added: "Both Hawking and McKellen in their narrative talk about what we all need to remember: don't just look down at your feet, look at the stars, be curious."

Her fellow artistic director Bradley Hemmings said the team approached Prof Hawking towards the end of 2011.

'Prudent budget'

"We worked very closely with Prof Hawking to develop a series of messages which are very much integrated into the storytelling of the ceremony.

"We have spent time with him [Prof Hawking] in Cambridge and have been so incredibly gratified with him giving his time".

Sealey would not revealed the cost of the event, but said it had been put together on a "prudent budget".

About ?27m was spent on Oscar-winning director Danny Boyle's spectacular Olympic opener, with the remaining ?53m divided between the Paralympic opening event and the closing ceremonies for both Games.

Lord Coe, chairman of Locog, said the ceremony will be a "great showcase of the skills and excellence of disabled artists".

"The London 2012 Ceremonies are truly global events, with billions of people across the world watching the four shows. This is undoubtedly a fantastic opportunity to showcase talents to the world."

Hopes are high that ParalympicsGB will emulate the success of TeamGB, but one of the UK's most decorated Paralympians has warned the competition for medals is likely to be tougher than ever.

Baroness Tanni Grey-Thompson, who has won 11 Paralympic gold medals, said overseas athletes will want to beat a British competitor on home soil.

"Most countries are envious of the support and funding our athletes enjoy but ParalympicsGB have been preparing well and will give everything they can to win all the medals they can," she added.

Britain finished second in the medals table at the 2008 Games in Beijing, winning 42 golds, 29 silvers and 31 bronzes. China were top with 211 medals, of which 89 were gold.

Worst drivers in US? Washington, D.C., take a bow

AP

Not only are the drivers bad, there's too much traffic. Motorists slog through the commute around Washington, D.C.

By Jim Gorzelany, Forbes

For those of us who live in and/or drive through major metropolitan areas, having to keep a watchful eye out for the antics of inattentive or even reckless drivers is a necessary part of our daily routine. You may think you?ve got it bad, but according to the eighth annual ?America?s Best Drivers Report? issued by Allstate Insurance in Northbrook, Ill., Washington D.C. can again lay claim to having the absolute worst motorists in the nation.

Allstate studied the auto insurance claims frequency of America?s 200 largest cities and found that residents of our nation?s capital were found to get into collisions on average once every 4.7 years. This means they?re a whopping 112.1 percent more likely to be party to an accident than the typical driver in the U.S., who wrecks his or her car once every 10 years.

Taken on a statewide basis, California would seem to have the worst drivers overall, placing five cities among the top 25, including Glendale (5), San Francisco (10), Los Angeles (14), Fullerton (16) and Torrence (22). New Jersey came in a close second with four cities among the top 25, with Florida and Virginia tied for third with three cities each.

Forbes.com: The most expensive cars to insure

And, no, New York City didn?t even make the top 10 in Allstate?s 2012 list, though it still ranked at number 20, with residents being 41.1 percent more likely than the average motorist to get into an accident.

Meanwhile, the safest drivers can be found trolling the streets of Sioux Falls, South Dakota, where the average motorist experiences a collision only once every 13.8 years, which is 27.6 percent less likely than the national average. Other top-five safest cities include (in order): Boise, Idaho; Fort Collins, Colo.; Madison, Wis., and Lincoln, Neb.

Among larger metro areas, the safest cities include: Tuscon, Ariz., (13); Milwaukee, Wis., (15); and Kansas City, Mo., (16).

Forbes.com: Diesel cars and trucks that will save you money

"It is vital for us to educate American drivers about safe driving behaviors they can practice on the road that will help make our roadways safer,? says Dave Prendergast, Allstate?s field senior vice-president. ?Minimizing distractions, obeying traffic laws, and using your car?s safety features like turn signals and headlights, are all ways to be safer, no matter where you drive.?

Here is Allstate?s full list of the 25 cities having the worst drivers, with each citation noting the likelihood a motorist living there is to be involved in a crash, relative to the national average:

  1. Washington, DC: 112.1% greater-than-average accident frequency
  2. Baltimore, MD: 87.9%
  3. Providence, RI: 80.9%
  4. Hialeah, FL: 77.6%
  5. Glendale, CA: 77.5%
  6. Philadelphia, PA: 64.1%
  7. Alexandria, VA: 62.6%
  8. Newark, NJ: 59.4%
  9. Miami, FL: 58.4%
  10. San Francisco, CA: 54.6%
  11. Jersey City, NJ: 53.9%
  12. Arlington, VA: 53.0%
  13. Tampa, FL: 50.2%
  14. Los Angeles, CA: 48.5%
  15. Paterson, NJ: 46.9%
  16. Fullerton, CA: 42.7%
  17. Garland, TX: 41.6%
  18. Elizabeth, NJ: 41.5%
  19. Bridgeport, CT: 41.2%
  20. New York, NY: 41.1%
  21. New Haven, CT: 37.5%
  22. Torrance, CA: 36.7%
  23. Norfolk, VA: 36.3%
  24. Yonkers, NY: 36.2%
  25. Arlington TX: 35.4%

The fine print: the 2012 Allstate America?s Best Driver?s Report is based on an actuarial analysis of company claim data among the nation?s 200 largest cities. Property damage claims were analyzed over a two-year period (from January 2009 to December 2010) to ensure the findings would not be impacted by external influences such as weather or road construction. A weighted average of the two-year numbers determined the annual percentages. The report defines an auto crash as any collision resulting in a property damage claim.

The Daily Illini :: Sports are about life, not just winning and losing

This isn?t going to be your typical sports column.

We need to get that out of the way immediately. I hope it doesn?t make things awkward, just give me a minute to explain.

I just don?t care about the professional sports, statistics and fantasy leagues. To me, sports are life. Sports are unavoidable. Trust me, I?ve tried to avoid them.

Sports are everywhere, in principle and in theory. There are over 70 listed athletic and recreation organizations on campus in addition to the 21 Division-I sports and, of course, there?s the overwhelming presence of professional sports worldwide. Then there?s intramural activities, workout facilities and the fact that everywhere you look someone is playing something.

You might consider yourself not a sports person or a sports fan, or think you have absolutely no interest in sports, but really, sports are a gateway between the principles of play and reality.

I look at the athletes? backstories: How behind the fame and the money and the phenomenally unrealistic athletic capabilities, they are just like us.

One of my good friends constantly tells me that every touching sports story is the same: Successful athletes find out they a terminal illness, then they attempt to fight said illness while continuing to compete. Then the athletes either overcome the illness or pass away, thus concluding a heartbreaking tragedy or a heroic tale. There?s so many different story lines that these athletes go through, so many different paths they take in their quest for personal fulfillment, just like any human.

This is untrue.

That?s what everyone is searching for, right? Happiness, success and greatness ? or simply the ability to go to bed with a feeling of contentment.

The fact that everyone, everywhere, has some connection with sports makes athletes the perfect humans to relate to. The pure essence of the game, worldwide popularity, accessibility and ability to relate to athletes is something nonexistent in any other area of life.

Take the London Olympics, for example: With 36 sports offered, there was something that most everyone could find an interest in. And with 204 countries represented, most everyone could find someone to cheer for, with every athlete came a different story of hard work, success and failure.

I wrote a 10-part series about an Olympic hopeful from Illinois, male gymnast Paul Ruggeri.

I was able to relate every stage of his journey to my personal life: the excitement and passion of pursuing a dream and the frustration when facing roadblocks. Then came the anxiety and restlessness of waiting for results, the satisfaction after minor successes and the indescribable feeling of doing everything you possibly could and falling short.

Ruggeri ultimately didn?t make the U.S. Olympic team. He?s a human like everybody else, even though he could probably scale a building and then do multiple back flips on top of it.

His journey of ups and downs, differing emotions and a progression through stages of life are applicable to your work life, personal relationships and education. Through sports, you can emphasize with these feelings on a large platform.

When Gabby Douglas became the first American gymnast to win the individual and team all-around gold medals, she inspired not only young gymnasts and African-Americans across the nation, but any young person with dreams about any form of success.

Look at cyclist Lance Armstrong, whose fall from grace was displayed to the entire world. Every part of his story is inspirational and relatable, even now. Life is continuing for him, despite everything that?s happened. Armstrong is the perfect example of real life, where people face remarkable successes and heartbreaking failures and even the intuition to walk away from it all.

Every athlete has a story and the story never stops, even after the pinnacle of success is reached ? just like with all of our lives.

There?s a little bit of an athlete or sports fan in everyone, even if you?ve never realized it before.

This year, we?re going to explore everybody?s inner athletic persona. We?re going to find the less common themes and angles and the less talked about activities. We?re going to travel the bridge between life and sports and everything in between.

We can look at athletes and learn from them, even if we never pick up a ball.

What is Primary Pulmonary Hypertension

What is Primary Pulmonary Hypertension?

Primary Pulmonary Hypertension (PPHP) is a condition involving increased blood pressure in the pulmonary arteries due to an unknown cause. (It is identified as ?primary? because the cause is unknown, unlike Pulmonary Arterial Hypertension where a cause has been identified involving an underlying condition of the heart or lungs.) The pulmonary arteries bring blood from the heart to the lungs to gather oxygen to deliver to the rest of the body.

With the increased blood pressure, at least one of three conditions affects the arteries: 1) The arterial walls were stiff from birth or became stiff due to cell overgrowth. 2) There is a tightening of the artery walls or 3) Blood clots form in the arteries.

With any of these three problems, the heart has a hard time pumping blood into the lungs. This strain in the heart leads to heart failure. The right ventricle (the chamber of the heart on the lower right side) is the part of the heart that pumps the blood to the pulmonary arteries. With heart failure, the strain that this part of the heart endures can cause an enlarging of the heart.

The heart becomes weaker with all the strain and can?t get enough blood to the lungs. The condition will worsen gradually over time, making activity harder and harder until everyday tasks are affected or stopped. It can eventually lead to a heart attack and death.

The severity of cases varies as a lot depends on the patient?s overall health and fitness, eating habits, lifestyle, age at diagnosis, and the severity of the condition at the time of original diagnosis. When people are diagnosed at age 40 or older or do not suffer from heart failure, they will live longer than those who develop the condition earlier in life or who already suffer from congestive heart failure.

PPHP is divided into four classes of severity, based in large part on the affect the condition is having on the daily activities of the patient. It is important to follow a physician?s advice and maintain treatment for maximum benefit and longer life.

Symptoms and Treatments for Primary Pulmonary Hypertension

Primary Pulmonary Hypertension (PPH) is a condition that involves high blood pressure in the pulmonary arteries. It can develop slowly over time, for years not manifesting anything more than mild symptoms. Some of the early symptoms involve chest pain, fatigue, and a racing heartbeat. These may be passed off as other issues for a time, until further symptoms develop.

As the disease progresses, there can be swelling of the ankles and legs, lightheadedness with climbing stairs and other light daily physical activity, shortness of breath with exertion, bluish skin or lips, and even fainting. The further along the disease progresses, the worse the symptoms become.

The increasing levels of severity are ranked in classes. In Class I the patient is not limited at all in physical activity. Class II involves only mild limitations on physical activity, but no issue when at rest. With Class III, there is a significant limitation on physical activity and symptoms are noticeable even with minimal activity. Finally, Class IV entails symptoms even at rest and the inability to perform any physical activity without troublesome symptoms.

The patient is diagnosed with a physical exam, a full medical and family history, and various tests and procedures such as an EKG, a chest x-ray, pulmonary function tests, exercise testing, lung scan, right heart catheterization, overnight oximetry, and an echocardiogram.

While there is no cure for PPH, treatments can help slow the progression of the condition and can alleviate some of the symptoms. Blood thinners prevent blood clots and reduce the blood pressure overall. Diuretics reduce fluid buildup, which helps with the swelling. And the medication Digoxin strengthens the heartbeat and thereby increases blood flow. Oxygen therapy is often prescribed and can increase oxygenation throughout the body. There are also surgical procedures and lifestyle recommendations that can improve PPH.

AP-GfK poll: Raise taxes to save Social Security

WASHINGTON (AP) ? Most Americans say go ahead and raise taxes if it will save Social Security benefits for future generations. And raise the retirement age, if you have to.

Both options are preferable to cutting monthly benefits, even for people who are years away from applying for them.

Those are the findings of a new Associated Press-GfK poll on public attitudes toward the nation's largest federal program.

Social Security is facing serious long-term financial problems. When given a choice on how to fix them, 53 percent of adults said they would rather raise taxes than cut benefits for future generations, according to the poll. Just 36 percent said they would cut benefits instead.

The results were similar when people were asked whether they would rather raise the retirement age or cut monthly payments for future generations ? 53 percent said they would raise the retirement age, while 35 percent said they would cut monthly payments.

"Right now, it seems like we're taxed so much, but if that would be the only way to go, I guess I'd have to be for it to preserve it," said Marge Youngs, a 77-year-old widow from Toledo. "It's extremely important to me. It's most of my income."

Social Security is being hit by a wave of millions of retiring baby boomers, leaving relatively fewer workers to pay into the system. The trustees who oversee the massive retirement and disability program say Social Security's trust funds will run out of money in 2033. At that point, Social Security will only collect enough tax revenue to pay 75 percent of benefits, unless Congress acts.

Lawmakers from both political parties say there is a good chance Congress will address Social Security in the next year or two ? if the White House takes the lead. Yet so far, Social Security has not played a big role in the presidential election.

In previous polls, Democrats have typically scored better than Republicans on handling Social Security. But the AP-GfK poll shows Americans are closely divided on which presidential candidate they trust to handle the issue.

Forty-seven percent said they trust President Barack Obama to do a better job on Social Security, and 44 percent said they trust his Republican opponent, Mitt Romney. The difference is within the poll's margin of sampling error.

Charles McSwain, 69, of Philadelphia, said he trusts Obama because he thinks the president is more likely to stick up for the middle class.

"He at least gives the appearance of trying to help people that aren't super rich, and Romney doesn't," said McSwain, who works part time selling real estate.

But Jeff Victory of Nashville, Tenn., worries that Obama doesn't have the stomach to cut benefits to help rein in the program.

"Barack has already shown he's going to give anything free out to everyone he possibly can, so I'm going to have to go with Romney on that one," said Victory, a 26-year-old electrician.

Romney has said he favors gradually increasing the retirement age, but he opposes tax increases to shore up Social Security. For future generations, Romney would slow the growth of benefits "for those with higher incomes."

Obama hasn't laid out a detailed plan for addressing Social Security. But during the 2008 campaign, he called for applying the Social Security payroll tax to wages above $250,000. It is now limited to wages below $110,100, a level that increases with inflation.

Obama says any changes to Social Security should be done "without putting at risk current retirees, the most vulnerable or people with disabilities, without slashing benefits for future generations and without subjecting Americans' guaranteed retirement income to the whims of the stock market."

Romney's running mate, Rep. Paul Ryan of Wisconsin, has been a leading proponent in Congress of allowing workers to divert a portion of their Social Security taxes into personal investment accounts. Romney has not fully embraced the idea, but Democrats are using it to accuse Republicans of trying to privatize Social Security.

Romney put Ryan on the ticket Aug. 11. The AP-GfK Poll was conducted Aug. 16-20.

About 56 million people get Social Security benefits. Monthly payments average $1,236 for retirees.

The options for fixing Social Security fall into two broad categories ? raising taxes or cutting benefits, or some combination of the two. But there are many options within each category. For example, raising the retirement age is a benefit cut for future generations, because they would have to wait longer to qualify for full benefits.

Retirees now can qualify for full benefits at age 66, a threshold that is rising to 67 for people born in 1960 or later.

In previous polls, most of the options for addressing Social Security scored poorly among the public, which helps explain why Congress hasn't embraced them. But the AP-GfK poll forced people to make a choice: Raise taxes or cut benefits? Raise the retirement age or cut monthly payments?

Democrats, Republicans and independents all favored raising the retirement age over cutting monthly payments. But there was a big divide on raising taxes. Sixty-five percent of Democrats and 53 percent of independents supported higher taxes, compared with just 38 percent of Republicans.

"Raising taxes, especially on the people that provide the jobs for us, is not an option because what you do there, you discourage promoting jobs," said James Taylor, a 68-year-old retiree from Golden, Miss.

But Juan Tellez, a 22-year-old college student in Gainesville, Fla., said he would accept higher taxes if it means preserving benefits, even though he's not very confident Social Security will be around for his generation.

"I think of Social Security as an investment, as a public investment almost, something more communal," Tellez said. "I feel like I would want to invest in that."

About three-quarters of the public believe Social Security is an important issue, though there is no consensus about whether people will be able to rely on it throughout their retirement. Only 30 percent said it was very likely or extremely likely they will be able to rely on Social Security.

Among people younger than 35, just 20 percent believe Social Security will provide income throughout their retirement, while 55 percent of people 65 and older said the same.

"I'm not planning on it at all, honestly," said Victory, the 26-year-old electrician.

The poll involved landline and cellphone interviews with 1,006 adults nationwide. Results for the full sample have a margin of sampling error of plus or minus 3.9 percentage points.

Bless Their Hearts Mom: Updated Product Review: Nexus 7 Tablet

Bless Their Hearts Mom: Updated Product Review: Nexus 7 Tablet

Updated Product Review: Nexus 7 Tablet

I really should title this one, part TWO of my original review of my new Nexus 7 Tablet (can I get a shout out to Staples for having an excellent electronics department?), as now that I've had time to play with use it. Now that I've gotten alot of use of it, I wanted to share some of the really cool things that I LOVE about it.?

First, it has really make me MISS my Android phone intently! For those who have not used Android, it is much more intuitive and user friendly of a platform than iphone. Everything has been simplified to one step, versus the 3-4 of iphone. Ever try setting a song from your computer as a ringtone on iphone? 2 programs and 5 steps, versus move from computer to phone and set in Android. ?The Nexus 7 has the new Android Jellybean and it is uber fast, responsive and beyond easy to use!?

I'm going to show you some screen shots (which you can take by merely depressing the power and down volume buttons at the same time, the device clicks and see the small screenshot to make sure you captured what you wanted to) and show you what wonders are on this phone!

Starting when you turn on the phone, you can set a password lock or a facial recognition lock. I love the facial lock, but with other family members using the tablet, I opted for a password. It only takes a couple of seconds to enter, but it keeps strangers from accessing my data, when I'm in a public place!
nexus right screen
You can set your screensaver to how ever you want it, including your favorite picture. I've kept the recent entertainment (Google books, music and magazines) tab as a front cover, for now. After I really involved in the tablet, I will probably change them. When you slide the screen left, you get the second home screen (see above picture), with the Google Play recommendations. You can click to like the suggestion, or to remove it, and a new one will come up. Google takes this info and the next time you log on, offers more content for you.
nexus google now screen
Or you can open the Google Now cards, by simply swiping up from the bottom bar?and get your local weather, traffic, sports news, public transit and flight info (picture above)! Yup, all at one swipe! Perfect for getting what you need to know BEFORE you get dressed for the day! This is perfect for those who are always on the go for business!?

nexus apps screen
When you hit the app button, all your apps are shown (picture above). This makes it really quick to go to one of your apps, say Gallery (photos) or Game (say Mah-Jong), without having to put them on one of your home screens. They are all alphabetical, so it's quick to find them!
nexus notification bar screen

But say you downloaded an app, and want to open it, but you just got a call about an email you need to open? Up on the top bar on the left, you'll see small icons pop up as email comes in, you download an app, update an app, or publish say a post to Blogger (see picture above) . All you have to do to open one of them is to swipe the bar down, find the item you want and click it. Yup it's THAT simple to switch from an app to your email. Want to go back to the app? Repeat with the bar, OR you can go to the previous apps bottom 'go' button. And there are all your recent apps (picture below) ! You can scroll up and down and find the one you want. And BAMM, you can be back where you were before you went to check the email! Easy peasy!?

nexus recent apps screen
The Google voice search has been really amazing. It is a super time saver and I've found myself using the voice type command ALOT. Say you have a blog post idea, but are at the school waiting on your child's basketball practice to end. if you've got wifi access, all you have to do is start a post, click on the microphone on the keyboard, and start talking. Your text will appear, you can save the post, and later you can edit it at home and publish it. AND you can use the Google voice wherever you use a keyboard, including email and Facebook!?

otg cableWhile having no removable SD card gives the tablet some limitations. By buying a USB OTG (On The Go) cable (on the left, which allows you to connect ANY usb device to your tablet), and Stickmount and ES File Explorer apps (both free in Google Play store), you can transfer files back and forth from the tablet and any USB memory device, like a thumb drive or back up hard drive.?

You can also bluetooth files VERY easily. I've transferred numerous files back and forth to my laptop, with no problem! If you have a bluetooth printer, you can also send files to it, when you go to share. This has worked wonderfully so far! I also have a Brother computer label printer, and the tablet works great with it, and the Brother app, so I can print out labels in any room, and not be tied down to the computer! Can I get a woo-hoo?

The other items you will need for your tablet will be a screen cleaner or film cover, and a carrying case. Though I have found I'm still debating on type of case, but I definitely want something I can put into my purse easily. Regular headphones work great with the tablet as well, for covert listening, but I highly recommend stereo Android ones, for better sound.

Additionally, if you will be working off-line on business documents, then you need to download one of the office apps, so you have word type document makers, as the Google Drive is great, but only accessible with wi-fi. It really comes down to doing a little research to see what apps you should download for YOUR needs. And naturally there is some trial and error, to see which ones you prefer. Luckily most of them have free trials, or free apps, to save you money! When you purchase the Nexus 7, you do get $25 credit to the Google Play store, as soon as you set up your account! That was pretty cool to me, as it enabled me to download a genealogy app that work with my Legacy Family Tree program on my home computer. It is so easy now to take the tablet with me, and if a genealogy questions comes up, I can pull up my ENTIRE genealogy file!?

Seriously, I use my tablet around the house ALL the time- it is easier than lugging around the laptop, and easier to read than the smart phone. The iphone has been relegated to pretty much a phone and alarm clock. I only use the laptop for loading pictures into blog posts, or if I have to cut and paste alot of info (the tablet and I haven't quite worked out the clipboard to my satisfaction- it works, but I can never get clipboard to clear when I need it to, I know it's operator error, just need to figure out the right app to help!?

If you are a busy mom on the go, busy professional, or technology craver, then the Nexus 7 tablet is definitely for you! Check it out, you'll want your own too!

Isaac upsets plans for GOP lobbyists, wealthy donors

A tropical storm named Isaac may accomplish what watchdog groups, newspaper editorials and ethics laws have not: it put a dent in the over-the-top entertaining and partying by lobbyists and special interests trying to buy access and influence with key members of congress at the political conventions.

The potential for fierce wind and rain threatened to shut down a number of lavish outdoor events, including a golf tournament whose influential guests were scheduled to include House Speaker John Boehner, a nighttime performance of Lynyrd Skynyrd, and a series of Senate fundraisers on a yacht called the Starship II.

Top party insiders had been scheduled to converge on Tampa for the Republican National Convention today, and SuperPACs and advocacy groups were provided the keys to many of the week's most exclusive gatherings ? allowing the wealthiest donors special access to the party's top political leaders.

But the impending storm appeared to blunt some plans. Turnout at the early receptions Saturday was light, and the delayed start of the convention meant many dignitaries would postpone their arrival.

Still, with the convention set to resume Tuesday, the selling of access ? a transaction often carefully shrouded in Washington, DC ? looked to still be ready for a full display in Tampa. A group of moderate conservatives called the American Action Network advertised the chance to mingle with members of Congress and senior staff at an arena skybox overlooking the convention floor for $30,000. Full access to the group's intimate luncheons and hot ticket concerts were open to their biggest supporters ? those who gave $250,000.

"It's absolutely stunning," said Charles Lewis, founder of the Center for Public Integrity. "I've never seen anything like this, honestly, and I have been watching politics like many of us for decades. Since Watergate I have never seen anything at this level of shameless."

According to Politico, which first reported on the American Action Network's convention plans, the center-right group is planning to spend $10 million to influence House races this year. Dan Conston, a spokesman for American Action Network, called the notion that his group is merely selling access "absurd."

"The sort of events we're organizing are policy panels on retirement security, to hear from the top officials in the country," Conston said. "We're discussing real policy issues ? A panel on jobs. A healthcare forum. We'll have some great speeches. And with our concerts, there's also a fun element to the convention."

Several of the party's wealthiest patrons will receive VIP treatment as the endless succession of receptions and cocktail parties keep them entertained.

One conservative group with ties to Republican House Majority Leader Eric Cantor is naming a pavilion on the sidelines of the convention after Dr. Miriam Adelson, wife of the party's single biggest donor this year, Sands Casino mogul Sheldon Adelson ? he's given $41 million, and counting. The pavilion will host women-themed discussions.

Another group, GOProud, which promotes inclusiveness for gay conservatives, will host an event called Homocon 2012 that will honor, among others, hedge fund billionaire Paul Singer, another of the largest GOP donors this cycle.

Many of the groups spending the most money are nonprofits that allow their donors to give money without their names being publicly disclosed. They are permitted to spend money to push for political candidates, as long as the majority of the money they raise also goes towards other purposes, such as advocacy of a particular issue.

Ellen Miller of the Sunlight Foundation told ABC News she believes this type of secrecy warps the political process in favor of the wealthy, and helps foster public cynicism about congress and Washington politics.

"Basically anyone can give anything to anyone and, and be completely anonymous, anonymous about it if they so choose," she said. "So whether it's Convention financing or Super-PAC financing or issue group financing or even just direct campaign contributions, the public is becoming less and less tolerant. They are tired of seeing politics swing the way of Wall Street, not of Main Street."

The sway of big money will be just as evident in Charlotte next week when Democrats gather for the Democratic National Convention. As ABC News reported earlier this month, organizers sent around a menu to top fundraisers and donors, offering "premier credentials" that access luxury suites and the convention floor to those who donate the most. Someone who could raises $1 million topped the convention host committee's list, while top flight packages were also spelled out for those who donatde $100,000 directly, or raised more than $650,000 (Trustee Package), $500,000 (Piedmont Package), $250,000 (Dogwood Package) and on down.

Unlike Republicans, the organizers in Charlotte have said they are attempting to increase the access and the number of events tailored to the party's rank and file members.

"We've gone further than any convention in history to find ways to provide greater access for the public," said Democratic National Convention Committee spokeswoman Joanne Peters.

Miller, of the Sunlight Foundation, said the conventions used have a fundamental role in the selection of each party's presidential candidate, but that has largely faded. "Now they're really nothing more than ? opportunities to be wined and dined by big corporate America," she said.
