Independent Video Gaming Rise | Blank Your Game

I had wrote this a while back about last year and I put it on a other site. Now that site is gone. So I felt like putting it back up again on my Site. This was my final essay for my English class so have a look and tell me what you think. Some of you might of read this before.

Independent Video Gaming Rise

Video games started by two guys wanting to play a game on a computer. Later on, after putting it into a bar, they learned that they can make money off of the game. As the years went by, there were major companies making games. The video games that really innovated the gaming industry were the independent games. During the early 1990?s there were not really any independent video games being made. Many people will say that in 1997, with the game Half-Life for the computer, allowed people to make their own game. Since then, independent games are not only made in the PC market, but they are now being made in the console as well.

Nolan Bushnell and Ted Dabney worked together to make the first coin video game arcade. This was the first form of independent video gaming; the game was called ?Computer Space? which was located at Stanford University. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Computer_Space ?After that, they started a company called Atari. As the years went by the major companies made most of the games in the 70?s, many of these games that where made didn?t bring anything new to the industry.

In the early 80?s a lot of self taught programmers made some of the biggest titles in video game history. Computers were something new and a few smart people understood that they could make their own games with writing code for the computer. One young programmer was making a game and to make it look real, he recorded his younger brother running and jumping. This allowed him to draw the character the same way. The way the game played and looked amazed players. He sold his game at local shops and later sold it to a major company.? Major corporate companies will make a game and if it sells well they will make a part two but won?t change much about it. They might change the graphics a little bit better but they won?t bring something new to the industry.

Half-Life was a great PC game in the late 90?s and people who purchased a copy of the game tinkered with it. They found out the code that they used in the game was very easy to work with. This spawned a trend of modifying the code to make a different game. More and more people started making little games using other company game code. Later on people started a small independent company making games or they would make enhancements to games that where already out. This was a small community which was growing larger because of the internet.

Now independent gaming is not just for the PC market only. Gaming consoles such as the Xbox 360 and PS3 will encourage people to make independent games. The Xbox 360 will have an area in their online video game store dedicated to indie gaming. Microsoft will allow people to use their code to make games for a small license fee. Sony will take a small independent game and put it on its online store right next to their major titles. So this opens up a new area of gaming to a much wider audience. I can?t wait to see what people will come up with next.
