MIDDLETON, Wis. (AP) ? Remember Roseanne Roseannadana? Or Emily Litella? Or Baba Wawa?

Younger generations might not recognize the characters popularized by comedian Gilda Radner. Nor might they remember Radner herself, an original cast member of "Saturday Night Live" who died 23 years ago and for whom a national cancer support group is named.

That's troubling to the Madison-area chapter of Gilda's Club, which decided to change its name in part because of concern that many don't know who Radner was. But the move prompted outrage from some Radner fans ? who saw it as a slight to a woman who confronted cancer with dignity and humor ? and led other chapters across the nation to hastily reaffirm they have absolutely no intention of changing their names.

Lannia Syren Stenz, the Madison-area club's executive director, said her organization decided to change its name to Cancer Support Community Southwest Wisconsin after it realized that most college students were born after Radner died in 1989.

"We are seeing younger and younger adults who are dealing with a cancer diagnosis," Stenz told the Wisconsin State Journal. "We want to make sure that what we are is clear to them and that there's not a lot of confusion that would cause people not to come in our doors."

Her comments angered some Radner fans, who let loose a storm of criticism on the organization's Facebook page.

"The only educating you're doing is teaching kids that when they die from cancer, their name will be erased from history in 20 years because the next generation doesn't know who they are. Way to give them hope!" wrote Mark Warneke, 44, a full-time college student in Arlington, Texas.

He told The Associated Press that taking Radner's name off the foundation was an insult to her memory.

Stenz referred questions from the AP to Linda House, executive vice president of the national group. House said there was no evidence that young people are unfamiliar with Radner and the name change was motivated by the desire to make the organization's mission clear. She called Stenz's comments "not accurate, period."

"Gilda Radner is very much a part of the fiber of this organization," House said. "There has never been an intent and there is no intent to lose Gilda as part of the organization."

Stenz's club held a ceremony Thursday to mark the name change, which will be phased it over the next month.

Radner, who was diagnosed with ovarian cancer in 1986, sought support from The Wellness Community in California and wrote about her experience in her book "It's Always Something," a reference to one of her characters' catch-phrases.

Her friends and family started Gilda's Club in 1991 on the East Coast to honor her legacy. The name was inspired by something Radner said after her diagnosis: "Having cancer gave me membership in an elite club I'd rather not belong to."

Gilda's Club Worldwide merged with The Wellness Community in 2009, and the joint headquarters in Washington changed its name to the Cancer Support Community. Local chapters were given the choice of keeping their names or switching to Cancer Support Community, House said.

The 56 chapters around the world deliver $40 million a year in free care to about 1 million cancer patients and their families, she said. Of those chapters, 20 are known as Gilda's Club, three are Wellness Community and 23 are Cancer Support Community.

Changing the chapters' names made sense to Ron Nief, a professor at Beloit College in southern Wisconsin who has made a career out of studying how different generations view the world differently. He said it could become harder for Gilda's Club to attract donations as fewer people remember seeing Radner on TV.

"I think we all want to keep our traditions alive," he said, "but there comes a reality in this case of what does this group represent and how do we raise money for it."

Radner's husband, actor Gene Wilder, said he didn't like the name change but he understood it. He said if he had to break the news to his late wife she might ask, "Do they have to throw me out?"

"I'd say, 'It's not throwing you out, honey, it's getting more money.' And she'd say, 'OK, I guess if they have to, they have to,'" he said. "It's too bad. I wish it weren't so. But I understand."

The Wellness Center where Radner once sought support in Los Angeles was one of the groups that updated its name. Julia Forth, the marketing director of what's now called the Cancer Support Community Benjamin Center, said people who get sick Google the word cancer, so it helps to have that word in the name.

Other organizations were adamant about keeping the Gilda's Club name. LauraJane Hyde, who runs the Chicago chapter, said her group has spent 15 years teaching people that Radner's name was synonymous with cancer support, in the same way people know what Starbucks sells even though "coffee" isn't in its name.

"A lot of people feel very passionately about the name," she said. "We will lose donations if we change it."

Radner remains a strong presence at the Madison-area club even without her name on the building in the suburb of Middleton. Paintings and drawings of Radner line the walls. One depicts her on top of Madison's state Capitol. Another imagines her sitting along the shores of Lake Mendota on the University of Wisconsin-Madison campus.

The meeting rooms are named after her Saturday Night Live characters, including New York-street smart reporter Roseanne Roseannadana, out-of-sync editorialist Emily Litella and speech-impeded talk show host Baba Wawa, a parody of Barbara Walters.

Drain Cleaning? The Secret to a Clean Drain - Poole's Plumbing, Inc.

Drain Cleaning Raleigh NC Tips & Tricks

Why is it important to keep my drain clean?

Maintaining a clean sink or bathtub drain is important for many reasons and can be done with minimal effort to help avoid running into costly and possibly dangerous plumbing issues. One obvious reason to clean your drains on a consistent basis is to avoid unpleasant odors. A more serious problem that could result from a neglected drain is the risk of pesky drain gnats. Also, failure to keep your drains clean will lead to buildup that eventually will cause water in your sink or tub to empty at a much slower rate.

What can I do to maintain my drains at home?

As mentioned in the preceding paragraph, keeping your drains clean is a simple process that can be done at home as long as you are willing to take a few minutes every few days to do so. The simplest way of avoiding unwanted buildup is to run scalding hot water through your tub and sink drains every couple days to make sure that there is no clogging and to keep gunk from building up. There are also many products available for purchase at most stores, that can keep your drains smelling clean and fresh. If you do notice buildup starting or clogging in your pipes it is best to immediately address the issue as early as possible, as neglecting these things could prove an expensive and messy mistake.

Realizing that your drain (or drains) are clogged is not necessarily an immediate reason to fret, as there are many tried and true remedies that can be made to clear them, right in your home. Most of these solutions are made from items that you already have on hand. One of these tried and true methods is to pour one tablespoon of baking soda into the tub or sink drain. Immediately dump ? cup of either lemon juice or vinegar down the same drain and let it sit for 30 minutes. Finally, run hot water through the drain. Repeating this on a weekly basis will help clear buildup and prevent the clog from recurring. Additionally, this will help eliminate unwanted, foul odors. Another at home method is to pour a strong salt water mixture through your drains. This is a proven way to keep grease from building up and to reduce bad odors.

When Home Remedies Fail

If you have tried the at home remedies and found them not working, there are many popular and potent chemical solutions that can be purchased at nearly any store or supermarket. If these chemicals do not work, it is best to call a professional plumber, who will be able to remove any blockage and have your drains flowing freely in short order.

Stop Interrupting! Tips to Maintain Respect in Your Family | Our Kids ...

?Stop interrupting, I?m talking!?? ?Well, if you didn?t take so long, I wouldn?t have to interrupt.?

?We?re not having spaghetti for dinner again, are we??? ?Yes, we are, do you want to do the cooking from now on??

?Why can?t you sit down for 5 minutes and tell me about your day?? ?I?m sick of talking!?

Stop Interrupting!

Who is talking here, the kids or the parents?? Some days it could just as easily be the parents as the kids.

We all want to have harmonious, respectful relationships in our homes but many family situations are stressful and respect and harmony fly out the window.? Small annoyances build up over the course of the day and when the ?power hour? rolls around, many of us are too stressed to be pleasant.

How can we resolve the situation?? The answer lies with us, the parents.? We set the tone for our children.? How we relate to stress and to our spouse is paramount and affects everybody in the family.

While we know in our heads that children do as we do and not as we say, sometimes we can?t understand why they are not respectful just because we ask them to be.

As leaders of the family, we need to role model being respectful ? to our spouse, to our children and to ourselves.? This is how our children are going to learn and how we are able to create a harmonious family atmosphere.

?Please don?t interrupt?? ?I will try not to interrupt but I have to make dinner now.?

?I wish we could have something besides spaghetti?? ?I do too; maybe tomorrow we could do something different together.?

?I?d like to hear about your day?? ?Please give me 15 minutes; I need to collect myself for a bit first.?

CSN: At this point, Eagles should bench entire secondary

frank_byline_new.png
It?s time to send a message to this secondary, send a message to this team, send a message to the fans, send a message to everybody that what we saw Monday night, what we?ve seen the past couple months, is unacceptable.

It?s one thing to say it. It?s another to do something about it. And it?s time for Andy Reid to make a statement that gross football negligence will no longer be tolerated, that leaving receivers and tight ends criminally wide open snap after snap, game after game, will no longer be tolerated.

This Eagles team certainly has a lot of major issues, a lot of glaring weaknesses. The offensive line is banged up and sputtering along, the defensive line is underachieving, the receivers are struggling, the linebackers have regressed, the quarterbacks haven?t done anything special for weeks.

But nothing has been as embarrassing, as pitiful, as hopeless as the play of the Eagles? secondary.

They have simply stopped playing.

They have simply stopped covering people.

They have simply stopped competing.

Nnamdi Asomugha and Dominique Rodgers-Cromartie are both former Pro Bowl corners. Nate Allen is a second-round pick who had an auspicious rookie year before he got hurt. Kurt Coleman is a late-round effort guy who isn?t the biggest or fastest but brings energy and attitude.

Put 'em all together and you have a living, breathing defensive backfield catastrophe.

The Eagles are in uncharted waters when it comes to pass coverage.

Five weeks in a row now, a quarterback has done this against the Eagles: Complete at least 64 percent of his passes, throw two or more touchdowns, throw zero interceptions and pass for 200 yards.

Five weeks in a row now, a quarterback has had a passer rating of 120 or higher against the Eagles.

Only one other NFL team in history ? the 1984 Vikings ? can claim those nightmarish accomplishments.

Five weeks in a row now, the Eagles? secondary has looked like an unprepared, undisciplined, overmatched, disinterested mess.

Asomugha, who arrived here with such huge expectations, looks lost. Rodgers-Cromartie, so brilliant in the preseason and the first few weeks, has dwindled down into nothingness. Allen seems to have mastered the art of running around in odd, random directions that have little to do with the play the other team has called. And Coleman ? he?s trying, but he?s just not good enough.

There?s only one thing Reid and Todd Bowles can do at this point.

Bench the entire secondary.

Make a statement. Send a message. Hold people accountable.

Will it turn the season around? No.

Will it send the Eagles to the playoffs? Of course not.

But at this point, at 3-8 with a seven-game losing streak and grotesque pass defense numbers being generated week after week after week, something has to change or the young guys on this team who are still playing hard, still fighting, the young guys who have to be part of this team?s future, will start believing that ineptitude and incompetence are acceptable around here.

Bench 'em all.

Nnamdi sits. DRC sits. Allen and Coleman sit.

Let?s get a nice long look at second-year third-round pick Curtis Marsh and rookie Brandon Boykin at corner. Brandon Hughes can play the slot. Somebody. Anybody.

Let?s get Dave Sims on the field at one of the safeties. He might not be Dawk out there, but he?s got some edge to his game, some toughness this defense desperately needs.

And Colt Anderson is best suited to be solely a special teams player ? and he?s a terrific one ? but he is a safety by trade and although he might be overmatched playing defense coming off an ACL, honestly, at least he?ll go out there and fight and battle.

So there?s your secondary starting Sunday in Dallas.

Nnamdi, DRC, Allen and Coleman sit.

Marsh, Boykin, Sims and Anderson play.

For the record, head coach Andy Reid said at his Tuesday presser that he has no plans at the moment to bench anybody, including his entire starting defensive backfield. He said he?s looked at all that and decided to stick with the status quo.

The status quo that in the last nine games has allowed 19 touchdown passes and intercepted two passes.

The status quo that has allowed five straight quarterbacks fashion a passer rating of 120 or higher.

The status quo that is embarrassing the Eagles' uniform on a daily basis.

Will a mass benching help?

Who knows. At least we?ll see four guys who are hungry, four guys who will play hard for 60 minutes, four guys who will at least try to play the right coverage.

They might make mistakes and get beat and give up touchdowns, but at least we?ll see some young kids who have some fire and energy and desire.

Things the current group just doesn?t have.

Barnes & Noble reports Q2 2013 earnings digital content sales up 38%, Nook unit rakes $160 million

Barnes & Noble's Nook unit didn't have its greatest quarter. The $160 million in revenue the new Microsoft-backed spin off raked in was slightly better than last year's $152 million, but still a significant drop from $220 million. In a sign of the growing ubiquity of e-readers however, digital content sales were up 38 percent while the units overall revenue was up just 6 percent. Of course the Nook is still losing money, having cut $51 million from the company's bottom line. If you step outside of the digital realm things are looking slightly better for the book purveyor, as profits were up to $65 million -- a 15.6 percent increase over the same time period last year. As we enter the holiday season things should start to look up for B&N and there were good signs during the four day shop-stravaganza from Black Friday to Cyber Monday as sales of Nook hardware doubled from last year. For all the fun financial details hit up the source.

New home sales stagnant, cast shadow on housing

WASHINGTON (Reuters) - New U.S. single-family home sales fell slightly in October and sales for the prior month were revised sharply lower, casting a faint shadow over one of the brighter spots in the U.S. economy.

The Commerce Department said on Wednesday sales dropped 0.3 percent last month to a 368,000-unit annual rate, while September's sales pace was revised to 369,000 from 389,000.

The housing sector has been a point of relative strength this year in an economy beset by flagging business confidence and cooling demand from abroad.

A report last week showed a surprisingly sharp gain in home resales in October, while data this week showed prices for single-family homes have risen continuously since February.

Economists expect home construction to add to economic growth this year for the first time since 2005.

Wednesday's data did not change the view that housing is still in recovery mode, although the pace of new home sales in October was below the level of May, suggesting little upward momentum. "It's just that progress will be slow," said Yelena Shulyatyeva, an economist at BNP Paribas in New York.

Separately, the Federal Reserve said in its anecdotal Beige Book report the market for single-family homes improved in most areas of the nation from late-October through mid-November.

The report, based on comments from the Fed's business contacts, said the economy had grown at a "measured" pace over that period, with consumer spending expanding moderately but manufacturing activity softening. Hiring remained modest, it said.

Weakness in business spending has been restraining growth, but housing has helped offset that. Consumer confidence has also been more bullish.

Wednesday's home sales report showed the median sales price for a new home in October was 5.7 percent higher than a year earlier, but the pace of year-over-year price gains slowed for a second straight month.

U.S. home-builder stocks fell on the data, even as broad market indexes rose slightly.

SALES WEAK IN NORTHEAST

Some analysts suggested the decline in sales in October might be partially due to a mammoth storm that slammed into the U.S. East Coast at the end of October. New sales plunged 32.3 percent in the Northeast, which bore the brunt of the storm.

"Some of this could potentially be Hurricane Sandy," said Megan McGrath, an analyst at MKM Partners in Stamford, Connecticut.

However, the Commerce Department said the storm did not affect data collection at all and its impact on sales was likely "minimal."

Economists polled by Reuters had forecast sales rising to a 390,000-unit rate last month from September's previously reported 389,000-unit rate.

To provide support for the housing market, the Fed has kept interest rates at rock-bottom levels since 2008. In September, it launched an open-ended program to buy mortgage-backed securities, driving mortgage rates to record lows.

In a third report, the Mortgage Bankers Association said applications for home purchase loans rose 2.6 percent last week to their highest level of the year.

Obama to appeal to public on 'fiscal cliff'

WASHINGTON (AP) ? President Barack Obama plans to make a public case this week for his strategy for dealing with the looming fiscal cliff, traveling to the Philadelphia suburbs Friday as he pressures Republicans to allow tax increases on the wealthy while extending tax cuts for families earning $250,000 or less.

The White House said Tuesday that the president intends to hold a series of events to build support for his approach to avoid across-the-board tax increases and steep spending cuts in defense and domestic programs. Obama will meet with small business owners at the White House on Tuesday and with middle-class families on Wednesday.

The president's visit to a small business in Hatfield, Pa., that makes parts for a construction toy company will cap a week of public outreach as the White House and congressional leaders negotiate a way to avoid the tax increases and spending cuts scheduled to take effect Jan. 1. The trip will mark Obama's first public event outside the nation's capital since winning re-election.

Both sides warn the so-called "fiscal cliff" could harm the nation's economic recovery, but an agreement still appears far from assured. The White House and congressional Republicans have differed on whether to raise revenue through higher tax rates or by closing tax loopholes and deductions.

House Speaker John Boehner, R-Ohio, has pushed for raising additional revenue through the reducing of tax loopholes instead of raising tax rates on wealthy Americans. The White House has countered that the president will not sign legislation that extends current tax rates for the top 2 percent of income earners, or those households with incomes over $250,000.

Pennsylvania Sen. Pat Toomey, a conservative Republican who opposes Obama's plan to increase taxes on the wealthy, said that while a presidential visit to his state "is always welcome," he remains staunchly against Obama's strategy for avoiding the fiscal cliff crunch.

"The president seems absolutely determined to inflict a tax increase on the American people," Toomey told CNN on Tuesday. He said Obama and congressional Democrats must come up with cuts in entitlement programs like Social Security and Medicare.

Obama, only weeks after winning re-election, has signaled his intention to rally the public to pressure Congress to support his agenda, an approach that helped him win passage of a payroll tax cut extension and prevented interest rates on millions of federal student loans from doubling last summer.

Obama campaign manager Jim Messina said in an email to supporters after the election that the president's volunteer base was crucial to his re-election but said it was not aimed "just to win a campaign. We have more progress to make, and there's only one way to do it: together."

Following the election, Obama aides asked supporters to record YouTube videos discussing the need to have the wealthiest Americans pay more in taxes. Some of the people who shared their stories on YouTube planned to join Obama at the White House on Wednesday.

On Friday, Obama will tour and deliver remarks at The Rodon Group manufacturing facility in Hatfield, Pa., offering the company up as an example of a business that depends on middle-class consumers during the holiday season. The company manufactures parts for K'NEX Brands, a construction toy company whose products include Tinkertoy, K'NEX Building Sets and Angry Birds Building Sets.

Congressional Republicans, led by Boehner, have expressed openness to discussing additional revenue but oppose any plan that raises tax rates on the wealthy. They argue that the higher rates would also hurt some small businesses and hinder economic growth.

Republicans have called for changes to the tax code to eliminate tax breaks and loopholes that primarily benefit the wealthy. Several key Republican lawmakers have also said they would not be bound by a no-tax-increase pledge that they have adhered to in the past.

Boehner and GOP leaders planned to meet Wednesday with members of a bipartisan coalition of former members of Congress and business leaders that has advocated cuts in spending in major health care programs as well as changes in the tax code to raise more money but also to lower rates.

GOOD GOVERNANCE: WHY GOD PERMITS OPPOSITION POLITICS

The crises of government today, across sub-Saharan Africa must be honesty identified and faced. For instance: the lack of transparency and persistence corruption characterized government in many parts of Africa and strong, stable government have increasingly become pressured by powerful economic special interests, from within and beyond their borders; these governments struggle to maintain the social contracts they have honored in the past. Throughout the world, government continues to be important players, expected to protect and further the common good. Yet their ability to do so has waned significantly due to policies of economy globalization, such as privatization, deregulation and debt restructuring. Government face multiple, conflicting obligations. They have a responsibility to protect and further the well-being and security of their people and natural resources. They are also under increased pressure to adhere to the requirement of international financial investors and trading partners.

The concept of good governance surfaced in 1989 in the World Bank report on sub-Saharan Africa, which characterized the crisis in the region as a ?crisis of governance? (World Bank, 1989). Since then, governance whether good or bad has become a major conditionality for donor funds. The Bible does not definitively mention good governance, but Genesis 1:28 and 2:15-17 describe the situation where God instructed MAN to take care of creation which involves decision making (stewardship). World Bank defines good governance as the manner in which power is exercised in the management of a country?s economic and social resources for development. According to Prof. John Wimberley, Governance means the setting and maintaining of law and order; this may apply at family level but is usually in the contest of civil society. Good governance is comprehensive as to issues it affect and considers but not intrusive in seeking to control people?s lives in details, as in totalitarian state found both in the extreme left-wing case of communism and the extreme right-wing case of dictatorships; indeed communism in practice and socialism in some cases amount to dictatorship and ?control freakily? by a small oligarchy and this can even reduce to one dominant leader.

Governance can either be ?Good? or ?Bad?. Good Governance briefly refers to the effectiveness of government. In considering good governance, democracy which refers to the legitimacy of government is seriously considered. No wonder the quality of government is ultimate attributable to its democratic content. Neither democracy nor good governance is sustainable without the order; there is need for the convergence of both conceptually and practically. A good governance system puts further requirement on the process of decision-making and public policy formation. It extends beyond the capacity of public sector to the rules that create a legitimate, effective and efficient framework for the conduct of public policy. Bad governance: refers to the breakdown in the effectiveness of governance structures and systems. The government of developing countries, especially Africa, is often accused of bad governance to the point that donor?s funds meant for them are often re-directed to civil society organizations. Bad governance has negative attributes of the main thrust of good governance related activities such as public sector management, modernization of public administration and privatization of state owned enterprises in a transparent, accountable, participatory and equitable manner. Governance exists at family, community, church, and institution, regional, local, national and global levels. The actors of governance depend on the levels of operation.

The dimension of good governance includes: spiritual, political, economic, environmental, cultural and social. The Church must ensure that the secular institution recognize the spiritual dimension of governance as without it, we labour in vain. For palatable governance, the following ingredients should be considered. Participation, rules of law, selection (democracy), independence of the judiciary, accountability, transparency, effectiveness and efficiency, delegation, capacity building-effective reforms required building the capacity to pursue it, responsiveness, consensus oriented, effective communication and succession plan.

There are various definitions of politics all bordering around the art and science of governing a state or its many would like to associate it with wheeling and dealing of tactical maneuvering and scheming to outwit one another in contest for taking control of government. The Christian should view politics as ?the management of the affairs of men?. Christian perspective of politics is the protection of life and property, enhancing the quality of life of the individual, justice and fairplay, respect for fundamental human rights, right to acquire knowledge and enhancement of personal development freedom and liberty based on equity. The constitution of the Federal republic of Nigeria 1999 states as fellows: ?to provide a constitution for the purpose of promoting the good government and welfare of all persons in our country on the principles of freedom, equality and justice and for the purpose of consolidating the unity of our people?.

Why God permits opposition politics? The Bible, God?s word revealed that there was political maneuvering in heaven during which Satan mobilized one third of angels to unseat and take over the control of God?s leadership of heaven (see Rev. 12:1-11 cp. Ezekiel 28:11-19). God is sovereign and in control of all that He has created and determines what will be. However, He never force His will on His subjects rather allows everyone to exercise their freewill to choose and to live their lives. He can make and unmake yet exhibit virtues of democracy and good governance in leadership. Hence He was not arbitrary in excluding Satan (means opponent) and other angels that wanted His throne. God allowed Satan to freely have his place to operate, mobilize, and seek supports of other angels to unseat God.

God never intimidate nor suppress alternate view. God allowed everyone to choose, never manipulates, coerce, bribe or give money to buy up opponents? supporters, seal up opponents? offices, kidnap or assassinate opponent, use thugs or praise singers to consolidate His leadership. He allowed opponents ? opposition politicking. Hence, God allowed Satan thrown out of heaven to freely move and scheme Adam and Eve politically speaking to accept his views, programs against the programs that God had earlier offered to them. This led to the fall (see Gen. 3). God allowed Satan, His opponent access to His presence and allowed Satan to undermine God?s programs to protect, secure and provide for the wellbeing of His subjects especially the case of Job and his family (see Job 1:6-2:13). At the end, God restored, protected and secured His subject Job and make life more meaningful and better inspite of His opponents attempts to rubbish His integrity and leadership (see Job 42:10-12). God is in control and Governor of the whole earth (see Ps. 22:28, 33:4-19).

It is in permitting the opposition of Satan and his angles by God that God has the chance to exercise His authority of leadership that He is in control and by so doing offered fallen humanity a second chance by providing for mankind?s redemption through the sacrificial death of Jesus Christ (Gen. 3:15 cp Rom.5). If God has not allowed His opponent free political space to maneuver and enabling environment to canvass for votes ? supports of other angles, there wouldn?t have been the creation of earth and delegation of authority to man to rule the earth. God never force man to obey His will. He never intimidates nor bribe man to get his support (vote). He gave man free will to choose (Dec. 30:19-20) God offered man His plan of salvation, provision of better life and abundant eternal life by accepting Jesus Christ as Lord and Savior (Jn. 3:16-18, 1:11-13, 14:6, 10:10). Neither gimmick, nor does God exclude anyone that does not support His view. He allows every one of us, good or bad to see and experience free air and live today. Ungodly politics excludes and undermines opponents. Ungodly politicians and rulers never cares even if their opponents or those who never sycophantically sing their praise to receive democracy?s dividends. Government that only provide for those who buy into their programs or view is ungodly and anti-God in nature and practice.

In allowing opposition politics equal opportunity to politick, Government will be acting like God and right to exercise authority to lead and take care of the needs of the people without bias to any. Government in allowing opposition politics like God will gain legitimacy in governance and grace to govern well. When you rule arbitrary, suppress opposition, you loss legitimacy and authority to rule spiritually. You overcome evil with good and not to get even with your opponent (see Rom. 12: 9-21). Effective governance is determined by your ability to carry everyone along including consulting and accommodating your opponents for the betterment of offering services to the downtrodden.

God consult others in creation (see Gen. 1:26-28) and permits Satan, his opponent to undermine His programs for Job and his family as quoted earlier. Writing under the title: Leadership, Legacy and Opposition Politics in Newswatch Magazine of July 21, 2008 Ebere Onwudiwe said, ?Competitive politics permits new ideas and new ideas are good for political and economic advancement. It is, therefore, my considered opinion that unless the country finds a way, to implement a balanced two-party system, our experiment with democracy will come crashing down. What Nigeria needs is a second strong political party, a Colossus to balance the PDP Goliath, one that can check the power of the PDP and vice versa. We do not need many little parties like little David chasing Goliath, the giant, with sling or catapult and hoping to prevail by the grace of God.

My friends, this is Nigeria we are talking about, not ancient Israel. Let me be clear, the problem with the development of opposition politics in Nigeria is not a monopoly of the People?s Democratic Party. It will be unfair and even dishonest to blame the PDP alone for the inability of this country to entrench real multiparty political system. The political class and the intellectual as a whole are equally as guilty.? God allows His opponent so Government and those who bear rule should allow opposition politics, without which they lose legitimacy and authority to rule or be re-elected into office.

Brazil deforestation hits record low

BRASILIA, Brazil (AP) ? Deforestation in Brazil's Amazon rainforest has dropped to its lowest level in 24 years, the government said Tuesday.

Satellite imagery showed that 1,798 square miles (4,656 square kilometers) of the Amazon were deforested between August 2011 and July 2012, Environment Minister Izabella Teixeira said a news conference. That's 27 percent less than the 2,478 square miles (6,418 square kilometers) deforested a year earlier. The margin of error is 10 percentage points.

Brazil's National Institute for Space Research said the deforestation level is the lowest since it started measuring the destruction of the rainforest in 1988.

Sixty-three percent of the rainforest's 2.4 million square miles (6.1 million square kilometers) are in Brazil.

The space institute said that the latest figures show that Brazil is close to its 2020 target of reducing deforestation by 80 percent from 1990 levels. Through July 2012 deforestation dropped by 76.26 percent.

George Pinto a director of Ibama, Brazil's environmental protection agency, told reporters that better enforcement of environmental laws and improved surveillance technology are behind the drop in deforestation levels.

Pinto said that in the 12-month period a total of 2,000 square meters of illegally felled timber were seized by government agents. The impounded lumber is sold in auctions and the money obtained is invested in environmental preservation programs.

Environment Minister Teixeira said that starting next year Brazil will start using satellite monitoring technology to detect illegal logging and slash-and-burn activity and issue fines.

"Over the past several years Brazil has made a huge effort to contain deforestation and the latest figures testify to its success," said Adalberto Verissimo, a senior researcher at Imazon, an environmental watchdog agency. "The deforestation figures are extremely positive, for they point to a consistent downward trend."

"The numbers disprove the argument that deforestation is necessary for the country's economy to grow, he said by telephone from his office in the Amazon city of Belem." Deforestation has been dropping steadily for the past four years while the economy has grown," he said

"But the war is far from over. We still have a lot of battles to fight and win."

For Marcio Astrini, Greenpeace coordinator in the Amazon region, said the lower figures show that reducing deforestation is perfectly possible, but he added that "the numbers are still too high for a country that does not have to destroy one single hectare in order to develop."

Could Catalonia's vote boost Basque independence?

Sunday's regional elections in Catalonia threw new obstacles into its path for independence from Spain. The independence-minded Basque Country hopes to adopt Catalonia's lessons.

The results of Sunday's local elections in Catalonia will likely have most immediate impact in the independence-minded region and in the halls of Madrid's central government. But their effects within other Spanish communities that harbor hopes for independence may prove just as profound.

Particularly in the Basque Country, where a 2008 push for a national referendum on the region's political status was declared unconstitutional by Spain's highest court, and where October elections similarly saw voters hand a strong mandate to the region's two separatist parties, many were looking to Catalonia for a tell on how next to proceed.

?For Basques it is very important what the Catalans are doing ? in Catalonia a majority is wanting to take steps towards independence,? says Pello Urizar, a Basque parliament member from EH Bildu, the conglomeration of left-leaning Basque separatist parties that last month won the second-highest number of seats in the regional parliament. ?We don't yet have as clear of a consensus.?

Catalan voters delivered a mixed message on Sunday night, dealing a heavy blow to Artur Mas, leader of Catalonia's ruling center-right nationalist party CiU, who had hoped for an absolute majority ? which would be a strong mandate for a referendum on Catalonian independence. But while the results still clearly supported the collection of political groups pushing for national independence from Spain, the CiU underperformed as its pro-austerity economic policies undercut its pro-independence efforts.

The Basque Country's pro-independence parties hope to learn from the Catalonian election in order to better find a popular balance.

?Both [Catalonians and Basques] are looking for the right to decide our own future, despite our different histories,? says Mr. Urizar. ?The results in Catalonia reinforce the fact that the road to independence can't be viewed just as social or just as economic.?

Last month's election in the Basque Country saw a surge in nationalism much like Sunday's record turnout for Catalan nationalist parties, with strong support of separatists on both the left and the right. In October, the center-right Basque Nationalist Party (PNV) and EH Bildu together won over 60 percent of the seats in the Basque Parliament, marking substantial gains for the Basque Country's separatist left.

'The fundamental difference'

Catalonia and the Basque Country are two of Spain's wealthiest communities, and since its financial collapse in 2008 both have been particularly vocal about the effect austerity measures imposed by Madrid on their economies. September and October saw large pro-independence and anti-austerity protests in each region, as well as a large general strike within the Basque Country.

Still, the calls for independence among Basques have been quieter recently, with many pointing to a preferential tax system and an unemployment level much lower than in Catalonia and than the national average.

?The fundamental difference is that Catalonia is much larger than the Basque Country, and that we have much more autonomy,? says Arkaitz Fullaondo, sociologist at the University of the Basque Country and political adviser in Bilbao to EH Bildu.

Much of this autonomy hinges on the Basque Country's unique tax agreement with Spain, which keeps more funds within the community for local use, explains Mr. Fullaondo. ?In Catalonia that doesn't exist.?

?The difference is that we manage our own money,? echoes Jose Unzueta, a spokesperson for the PNV, ?what we generate goes to the local governments first, with a percentage then later going on to Madrid.?

?The taxes that [Catalans] pay are first sent to Madrid and much stays outside the community,? Mr. Unzueta adds. ?They are now rejecting this formula.?

While Mas has not yet said explicitly whether or not the CiU will move forward with a referendum on Catalan independence, he has acknowledged that his party lacks the supermajority he had expected from the election. Any moves towards independence will have to be in concert with the left-wing ERC and Catalonia's other separatist parties, who together control nearly two-thirds of the Catalan Parliament.

It is unclear what the next step is for separatists in the Basque Country, where nationalist parties command a similar majority in the regional parliament. Many will likely be watching for Catalonia's next move to gauge how Madrid will react to the specter of a full referendum.

?What we have in common is we're up against a Spanish state that won't let the people decide their future,? Urizar adds. ?We've got to develop the conversation and work towards the conception of a new state that works with right and left.?

Levees protect New Orleans, but annual bill is costly

By Cain Burdeau, The Associated Press

In the busy and under-staffed offices of New Orleans' flood-control leaders, there's an uneasy feeling about what lies ahead.

By the time the next hurricane season starts in June of 2013, the city will take control of much of a revamped protection system of gates, walls and armored levees that the Army Corps of Engineers has spent about $12 billion building. The corps has about $1 billion worth of work left.?

Engineers consider it a Rolls Royce of flood protection ? comparable to systems in seaside European cities such as St. Petersburg, Venice, Rotterdam and Amsterdam. Whether the infrastructure can hold is less in question than whether New Orleans can be trusted with the keys.?

The Army Corps estimates it will take $38 million a year to pay for upkeep, maintenance and operational costs after it's turned over to local officials.?

Local flood-control chief Robert Turner said he has questions about where that money will come from. At current funding levels, the region will run out of money to properly operate the high-powered system within a decade unless a new revenue source is found.?

"There's a price to pay for resiliency," the levee engineer said from his office at the Southeast Louisiana Flood Protection Authority-East. "We can't let pieces of this system die away. We can't be parochial about it."?

On Nov. 6, New Orleans voters were faced with one of their first challenges on flood protection when they voted on renewal of a critical levee tax. The tax levy was approved, meaning millions of dollars should be available annually for levee maintenance.?

Bob Bea, a civil engineer at the University of California, said the region must find additional money to keep the system working properly. "If you try to operate it and maintain it on a shoestring, then it won't provide the protection that people deserve."?

Many locals remain uneasy, even though Turner's agency is a welcome replacement for local levee boards that were previously derided.?

"It's scary," said C. Ray Bergeron, owner of Fleur De Lis Car Care, a service station in the Lakeview neighborhood where water rose to rooftops after levees collapsed during Hurricane Katrina in August 2005. Before Katrina, Bergeron said the local levee boards were complacent. "They told everybody everything was fine, 'Oh yeah, it's fine. Let's go have martinis and lunch.'"?

After Katrina, the locally run levee boards that oversaw the area's defenses were vilified, and quickly replaced by the regional levee district run by Turner.?

Congressional investigations found the old Orleans Levee Board more interested in managing a casino license and two marinas than looking after levees. Inspections were ceremonial, millions of dollars were spent on a fountain and overpasses rather than on levee protection. And there was confusion over who was responsible for managing the fragmented levee system, U.S. Senate investigations revealed.?

Still, experts generally agree the old levee board's failings did not cause the levees to collapse during Katrina. Poor levee designs by the corps and the sheer strength of Katrina get the lion's share of the blame.?

Since the Flood Control Act of 1936, the Army Corps has given local or state authorities oversight of water-control projects, whether earthen levees in the Midwest or beach walls in New England.?

"That's been the eternal problem with flood-protection systems," said Thomas Wolff, an engineer at Michigan State University. "You build something very good and then give it to local interests who are not as well-funded."?

New Orleans is an unusual case because the area is inheriting the nation's first-of-its-kind urban flood control system.?

"We've given a very expensive system to a place that may not be able to afford it over the long term," said Leonard Shabman, an Arlington, Va.-based water resources expert. Letting the Army Corps run it isn't much of a solution either, he added. "It's not like the corps' budget is flush."?

The nation has spent lavishly on fixing the system in the seven years since Katrina flooded 80 percent of New Orleans and left 1,800 people dead.?

"It is better than what the Dutch have for the types of storms we have," said Carlton Dufrechou, a member of the board of the Lake Pontchartrain Basin Foundation, which monitors local environmental issues.?

Ensuring it remains that way could be tricky. The biggest headaches are several mega-projects with lots of moving parts, all needing constant upkeep. The corps is building them across major waterways that lead into New Orleans.?

Take for instance the 1.8-mile-long, 26-foot-high surge barrier southeast of the French Quarter that blocks water coming up from the Gulf of Mexico across lakes and into the city's canals. Water from this direction doomed the Lower 9th Ward and threatened to flood the French Quarter. Maintaining this giant wall alone will cost $4 million or more a year.?

"You have to get out there and do exercises, do the preventive maintenance, change out equipment over time on a particular schedule," Turner said, enumerating the challenges. "There are a lot of cases where a single thing goes wrong and that can create a failure, a complete failure where you can't close the system."?

There is a mounting list of to-dos.?

Already, lightning has knocked out chunks of wall. Grass hasn't grown well on several new stretches of levee. Louisiana State University grass experts have been called in to help seed them.?

There are recurring problems with vibrations and shuddering on a new floodgate at Bayou Dupre in St. Bernard Parish. The corps has plans to overhaul the structure in the spring before handing it over to local control. And there will be the inevitable sinking of levees and structures, as always happens in south Louisiana's naturally soft soils. Over time, levees will have to be raised.?

Col. Ed Fleming, the New Orleans corps commander, said his outfit will work to ensure the transition to local control is smooth.?

"This happens with corps civil projects all over the country. That's the way it works in Iraq, Afghanistan," he said. "We have authority to build, but we have no authority to do operations and maintenance."?

Subatomic particles and fuzzy time

Subatomic particles don't care if time moves forward or backward ? it's all the same to them. But now physicists have found proof of one theorized exception to this rule.

Usually, time is symmetrical for particles, meaning events happen the same way if time progresses forward or backward. For example, a video of two particles colliding and scattering off each other can be played forward or backward, and makes sense either way. (That's not the case for macroscopic objects in the real world. You can spill a glass of milk on the floor, but if time were to move backward, the milk can't pick itself up and fall back into the glass.)

However, physicists thought there might be cases where time wasn't symmetrical for particles either ? where certain events worked with time flowing in one direction and not the other. Now, for the first time, they've found proof of this phenomenon.

Researchers working on the BaBar experiment, which ran from 1999 to 2008 at the SLAC National Accelerator Laboratory in California, analyzed nearly 10 years of data from billions of particle collisions. They now report that certain types of particles change into one another much more often in one direction than they do in the reverse, confirming that some particle processes have a preferred direction in time.

    4. Bulgaria claims to find Europe's oldest town

This is the first solid proof of time asymmetry for subatomic particles. [ Nature's Tiniest Particles Dissected (Infographic) ]

"It was exciting to design an experimental analysis that enabled us to observe, directly and unambiguously, the asymmetrical nature of time," BaBar collaborator Fernando Mart?nez-Vidal, a physicist at the University of Valencia in Spain who led the study, said in a statement. "This is a sophisticated analysis, the kind of experimental work that can only be done when an experiment is mature."

The particles in the experiment were B mesons, which are made of one quark and one antiquark (the antimatter partner of a quark) in the "bottom" flavor. B mesons can flip between two different states called B-zero and B-even, and the BaBar data show that these transformations happened six times more often in one direction than in the other.

Previous attempts to look for time asymmetry were not direct, because researchers were unable to disentangle time asymmetry from other asymmetries involving charge and parity (a particle characteristic akin to left- or right-handedness).

In the new study, scientists harnessed the power of quantum entanglement, in which two particles can be connected so that an action on one reflects in the other. Using this phenomenon, the scientists were able to measure one B meson and acquire information about another particle at the same time.

"In the past, a true test of time-reversal symmetry with unstable particles was considered to be impossible," said BaBar associate Jos? Bernab?u, also at the University of Valencia. "It's spectacular that the solution came from the same entanglement phenomenon used for quantum communication and computing."

The discovery was reported this month in the journal Physical Review Letters.

Exercising your creativity ? top 10 fun alternative workout ideas ...

When you?re starting out with exercise, routine is really helpful to help embed the fitness habit. After a while though, it can get just, well? a bit routine. So here are my top ten ideas for some new fitness activities to try out to get your enthusiasm flowing again. Novel exercises will also utilise a different mix of parts of your body and specific muscles. This will shake your body out of its complacency and give you a fitness and confidence boost too. The only limit is your own creativity! Have fun and do report back on Facebook how you get on with these suggestions, or other new things you try out.

1. Spacehoppers

The ultimate silly way to workout. Retro hoppers are back in fashion, or you can try out funky new designs. They?re a great mix of cardio blasting, leg strengthening, core toning and competitive daftness

2. Pole dancing

Not just for aspiring ?adult? entertainers. Working a pole well needs real strength and will develop your flexibility at the same time as having a giggle with like minded folks in a class.

3. Roller skating

Forget the dusty old skates hidden in your loft or at the back of the garage. There?s a brilliant choice of fun, funky skates out there to try now. You can skate normally outdoors, at your local rink, try some tricks at a skate park or fire up your team spirit by getting into Roller Derby. Something for all levels of fitness and nerve!

4. Orienteering

If you think ?straight? running is boring, then this is your opportunity to exercise your mind whilst you?re moving. Fun for all the family (there are races and events for all ages), it?s also a chance to explore new areas at high (though not too high or you?ll miss the checkpoints!) speed.

5. Kettlebells

Fire up your posterior chain to work those big muscles in the back of your body. Get some proper tuition in a class or one to one before swinging these iron weights about the place. Focus on your cardio system with swings and develop explosive power and strength from dynamic lifts and movements.

6. Rowing

You can brave the chill of the river or canal by joining in with your local club. Or stay warmer by applying good technique (it?s NOT all about your arms!) on the rowing machine at the gym. Outdoor rowing is very skilful ? from just getting into the boat and keeping it upright, to perfecting the timing with your oars with your team mates.

7. Hula hooping

Another 70s throwback which has hit the scene big style recently. Powerhoop is the branded ?product? gaining all the attention and has classes on the timetable at loads of private and council run gyms. Fantastic for toning your core and working your waist in particular.

8. Martial arts

There are SO many martial arts out there and they range from mobility and movement based (e.g. Tai Chi/Chi Gung) to full on combat forms (e.g. TaeKwonDo/Kickboxing). Specific benefits depend on the type you choose. But they?ll all give you some structure and discipline within a social setting. You?ll feel you?re learning something useful (self-defence & self-confidence) and interesting too.

9. Ballet

A great way to develop poise, balance, flexibility and strength. The routine of regular classes will keep you focussed and intent on improvement. No tutus needed, but it?s a brilliant chance to dig out your leg-warmers and maybe even show off on stage.

10. Suspension training

Nothing to do with discipline difficulties at work! Using straps anchored to the ceiling, you can get your whole body involved in a different take on strengthening and toning. Find out if your local gym offers TRX classes to keep up your interest levels.

Which is your favourite? These are just a smattering of fun suggestions to get you going. An exercise routine doesn?t have to be routine to be effective. So get out there and mix it up!

The Key to Celebrating Holidays with Multiple Family Loyalties ...

Step, Blended & Reconfigured: Making Holidays Bright for Kids with Multiple Family Loyalties

?You hear a lot of dialogue on the death of the American family. Families aren?t dying. They?re merging into big conglomerates.?
~ Erma Bombeck

They are called stepfamilies, blended families, reconstituted or reconfigured. The modern family often includes multiple people from multiple relationships. More than any other time of year, holidays highlight the departure from what has been seen as the ?traditional? family.

As with most things, this can be an affirmation of successful reconfiguration of one?s family or a reminder of all the things that were, and perhaps still are, wrong. For most, it?s a complicated mix of regrets, relief, anger, sorrow and joy.

For most, it?s how the adults manage the situation that determines the health and safety of the heart part of the new configuration of the family.

However committed, enthusiastic, and in love new partners may be, the children who share heredity with only one member of the couple have a different experience and therefore different feelings about the season than the adults. It?s important to remember that in the vast majority of cases, the children of divorce didn?t want it. They often worry that they?re at fault. They have competing loyalties to both parents. They often wish there were a way to get their original family back to whatever they experienced as ?normal.?

However wonderful mom?s or dad?s new partner may be, they are prepared not to like him or her. They often grieve their former family quietly ? or not so quietly ? for years. As a result, they are often even more ambivalent and conflicted about holiday traditions than the adults. While the adults are enthusiastically trying to make the holidays bright and joyful, the children may find it a painful time of revisited loss of the actual family that was or the myth of how the family might have been if only?

The key to transitioning to a different sense of ?family-ness? is flexibility on the part of adults. Adults, being the adults, need to respect their children?s reluctance and understand where it?s coming from. By tuning in and being flexible about how holidays are celebrated, the adults can help create new traditions that nurture the heart of the new ?conglomerate? called their family in all its complexity.

Be Flexible about Dates

For some, it?s a radical idea: Dates aren?t important. Feelings are. When children are caught in the debate of who ?gets? Christmas morning or Hanukkah first night, the time with whoever ?wins? is shadowed by the knowledge that they have left the ?loser? alone. When both parents insist on having the kids be part of Christmas Day or when kids are expected to eat a huge meal at two Thanksgiving dinners, the kids often end up overwhelmed and emotionally and physically exhausted.

Lighten up. Holidays are only 24 hours long. But the season lasts a couple of months. Everyone can have a holi-DAY. Alternate years for the actual holiday if you must, but don?t make the day with the other parent seem like a second-rate event. It?s not. It?s that parent?s special day with the children.

Be Flexible about Traditions

The adults may want to start new traditions for the new family. But kids are stubborn little creatures who thrive on predictability and sameness. Consider which traditions can be transferred to the stepfamily scene. If there are kids from both former marriages, help the children from each side introduce one or two special traditions to the mix. Then add a new tradition or two that isn?t tied to a particular family or a particular day.

A visit to Santa or a ride to view neighborhood lights can happen any time between Thanksgiving and New Year?s. Making candles for the menorah can happen any time before Hanukkah. Making and sending greeting cards can be a family event that happens well before the holiday week. Creating new traditions like these doesn?t compete with the children?s enjoyment of their other parent?s celebration and are part of defining the new family?s sense of ?us.?

Be Flexible about Who is Defined as Family

Those who divorce well separate without hatred or rancor. They agree that they couldn?t keep the marriage going but feel no need to revisit the conflicts and pain that caused them to part. They keep their children out of the middle and appreciate what the other parent has to offer. Yes, it does happen.

For such families, it?s not a stretch to create some moments in the holiday season where everyone can be in the same place at the same time. Mom, her new partner, his kids, her kids, her kids? father and new partner and her kids, can get together to do something low-stress like attending an event together or volunteering to help at a charity. Such activities bring the people together but don?t require one group to host the other.

When the adults can manage this, the children are reassured that they won?t lose anyone from their sense of family. They are given ?permission? to add people to their list of people who love them. They can love and be loyal to each parent without fearing the loss of the other.

Be Flexible ? Even if You Don?t Want to Be

Unless your former partner has abused the children, they can and should have a healthy, loving relationship with each other. No matter how hurt and angry you may be with your former spouse, no matter how much you hate him or her for what was done that made staying married impossible, no matter if child support isn?t coming as regularly as it should or if your former partner is irresponsible about finances, no matter how threatened your current partner is by the kids? relationship to their other parent ? those are the adults? problems, not your children?s.

Separate flexibility around honoring the holidays from unfinished emotional, psychological, or financial matters that were part of your divorce. If you refrain from making negative comments about their other parent and support the children in having a positive relationship with him or her, they will eventually figure out on their own just why the divorce was necessary. They will love you for not making them into unwilling allies in your fight and for giving them support in staying solidly connected to their other parent too.

The holidays only underline the issues that go on all year. Children of their parents? divorce, separations, and re-partnering are going along for a ride that most would not choose. It?s up to the grownups to be grown up. Making the holidays bright for children means doing whatever it takes to keep the focus on their needs. Not surprisingly, doing that also warms the family heart.
