There was a big surprise on the Shore fishing scene this week as stripers showed up after most anglers had given up on them. It was so nice Monday afternoon that I only used my Tsunami Marlin boat boots to walk the shoreline at Sea Girt and was surprised by three small stripers on a Joe Blaze fly teaser.
Joe Melillo, at Castaway?s Tackle in Point Pleasant, reported anglers were catching bass up to 30 inches from Deal to Allenhurst that day, and some regulars at the shop did well the next morning in Point Pleasant. I shifted my efforts south of Manasquan Inlet for the first time since Sandy, and released five bass up to 25 inches Tuesday evening in Point Pleasant on theTsunami Eel and a black Mambo Minnow.
The long overdue mackerel finally showed up this week for Capt. Jimmy Elliott on the Golden Eagle from Belmar. The volume wasn?t satisfactory, but with fine weather predicted for the weekend that fishing could break open.
The Jamaica from Brielle and other boats fishing the far offshore wrecks for jumbo sea bass are catching limits of 15 bass before seeking porgies and pollock at other wrecks. The Jamaica II from Brielle reported very good ling fishing Sunday. Chris Molinari of North Haledon was high hook with 48 ling. Mike Stauss of Manville won Saturday?s pool on the Big Jamaica?s Saturday offshore wreck trip with a 6-pound sea bass.
The Jamaica is making those sea bass trips every Wednesday, Friday, Saturday and Sunday through February ? leaving at 11 p.m. the night before. Call 732 528-5014 for reservations. The Jamaica II had the largest cod reported in some time on a recent trip to a wreck in 150 feet, 40 miles offshore. Peter Callas of Paramus boated a 42-pounder. Derek Williams of Newark had three cod, 20 ling, 10 sea bass and a pollock on that trip.
Capt. Joe Massa, of My Three Sons at Morgan, joined former Assemblyman Guy Talarico of Oradell on his boat from Jersey City on Sunday as they didn?t see any signs of stripers heading south.
Canyon Runner Charters is booking up for the North Carolina winter bluefin tuna fishery out of Pirate?s Cove in Manteo. Average catches at that time are 10 to 15 bluefins in the 100-to-300-pound class, and anglers can use jigging and casting tackle for them.Though the Canyon Runner boats are booked, they?re also chartering Capt. Dennis Edner on the 57-foot A-Salt Weapon ? who was the top captain in the area last winter. Call Adam La Rosa at (732) 272-4445 for information.
The N.J. Beach Buggy Association will be running a fishing flea market on Saturday, Jan. 26 in the Toms River Elks, 600 Washington Street from 8 a.m. to 1 p.m.
