HONOLULU ? Ryon Healy went 3-for-3 with two doubles and Tommy Thorpe threw five solid innings as Oregon built an early lead on its way to a 5-4 college baseball victory over Hawaii at Les Murakami Baseball Stadium on Saturday night.
The Ducks? second victory in as many nights matches 2010 season for their best start since the sport was reinstated at the school five years ago.
Oregon scored twice in the second inning. Healy led off with a first-pitch double, took third on Ryan Hambright?s sacrifice and scored on Kyle Garlick?s sacrifice fly.
Steven Packard also doubled and came around to score on two wild pitches for a 2-0 lead.
The Rainbows (0-2) answered in their half of the second with a two-out walk and a pair of singles off Thorpe to cut Oregon?s lead in half. But the Ducks came right back in the third when Brett Thomas walked, advanced on a wild pitch and scored on Healy?s second double to go up 3-1.
The lead swelled to 5-1 in the fifth on an RBI double by Thomas and Hambright?s single that drove in Thomas.
UO coach George Horton turned to his bullpen in the sixth, and Cole Wiper gave up two singles and a two-run double to Tyler Young to cut the deficit to 5-3. Darrell Hunter relieved Wiper and, after hitting a batter and yielding a single, ended the inning with a flyout and a double play.
Then Hunter in the seventh and Garrett Cleavinger in the eighth were perfect before Horton turned to his closer, Jimmie Sherfy, for the final inning.
Hawaii put runners on second and third before scoring on a groundout to make it 5-4, but Sherfy got Kaeo Aliviado to fly out to end the game and record his first save.
Game three of the series starts at 3:05 p.m. today with freshman left-hander Cole Irvin scheduled to take the mound for the Ducks. The Rainbows will counter with right-hander Conner Little, who redshirted last season after going 4-4 with a 5.18 ERA in 2011.
