When I was learning how to fish as a small boy, my father used the swim or drown approach to knot tying. He showed me how several times, and if I couldn't figure it out, then I was on my own. For that reason, as a young boy, most of the time, my hooks were tied using several overhand knots.
At some point, I saw a picture on a package of hooks that showed how to tie a Palomar knot. It was easy to do, and I have been using it every since. It is easy enough that even small children can learn it if shown several times. It is the knot I taught my children to tie, and it is the knot I will teach to my grandchildren.
