Talking Pets: Dog bites are largely preventable

For pet families with dogs, one of their biggest concerns is that their dog will bite someone.

We had a case in our family one time of a dog bite ? on Christmas Day, no less ? and while it?s now part of the ?remember when? family lore, it was an incident that could have been avoided.

The Centers for Disease Control reports on its website that 800,000 Americans seek medical attention for dog bites each year ? and half of them are children.

?Dog bites are a largely preventable health problem,? the CDC says, ?and adults and children can learn to reduce their chances of being bitten.?

Any dog can bite, not just big dogs or dogs labeled as ?aggressive

breeds.? In fact, the CDC does not identify specific breeds that are most likely to bite, saying that studies that do indict particular breeds are unreliable.

A dog can bite if he?s scared, if he?s under stress, if he?s sick or hurt, if he feels trapped, or if he?s bitten before and he knows if will make you back off. Many times, bites occur when people are approaching a dog they don?t know and the introduction goes badly. The Christmas Day bite was one of those.
